Best Lebanese Movies: War, Drama & Deep Stories

Lebanese movie recommendations

Hello everyone,

I've been on a nostalgia role lately and have been watching Lebanese movies. I need some new recommendations, I want movies with a story that has either a social, psychological or philosophical depth to it. I also love movies about the war. Here are some movies I watched recently and loved :

Capernaum
West Beyrouth
Ghadi
The insult
Very big shot
Under the bombs
Amani Taht Qaous Qazah

I don't want "soap opera" type movies. You can also recommend series. You can recommend the titles in English or arabic.

Also if you can recommend a link to where you find the movies, it would be appreciated. I live in Canada and it's not always obvious to find the movies through typical American or European websites.

Thanks in advance,

Syria Events May Shift US Policy on Hezbollah Disarmament

Opinion: Events in Syria will likely change the US eagerness for a swift and/or forceful disarmament of Hezbollah.

First of all, I don't want to comment specifically on what happened in Syria, but I do need to say this. I hope all civilians in Syria are safe, and my heart goes out to the Druze civilians in Suwayda, who are currently in a very difficult position because of the attacks against them. And I hope for all civilians, and my Druze brothers specifically, to be safe and sound always.

The idea, basically, of what Tom Barak said about encouraging the Syrian president to create this unified, centralized country, in which the idea is to monopolize arms only to the state and disarm all nonstate actors, is taking place, and we see the dangers of such a strategy when you try to disarm by force.

Obviously, the Syrian situation is very different, and the conduct of the Syrian army is basically a ragtag group of militias that do not live up to the standards of an army, so they cannot be compared to the conduct and professionalism of the LAF, disregarding actual military capabilities. So the Syrian army is basically a collection of militias, many are religious extremists. But we can somewhat put this under the very general "title" of disarming non-state armed groups. Where the Syrian nominal army tried to disarm the Druze by force.

But regardless, this episode shows us that the US would probably revise their eagerness to disarm Hezbollah quickly, swiftly, and decisively, because you can see when you try to disarm a group through force and coercion, the result would be sectarian battles and sectarian blood, and it would possibly change what could have been a more streamlined operation into something very messy and one that would endanger the entirety of the Lebanese state.

So I think for now, even the US would try to scale back its demands for the forceful disarmament of Hezbollah and would likely favor Aoun's approach of dialogue. In my personal opinion, Aoun's approach to dialogue is not going to go anywhere, and therefore, Hezbollah will not be disarmed anytime soon because dialogue won't solve shit. But Aoun is probably...

Lebanon’s Civil War and Syria’s Druze: History Repeats?

History repeats itself

For those who don't know, in Lebanese civil war, Christians were attacked by Muslims (PLO) so they started having their own miltiias backed by Israel and Israel even helped them build an autonomous region for Christian Lebanese, these Christian miltias massacred Muslims (Sabra and Shatila massacres) and many Muslims during that time associated Lebanese Christians of being Zionists which caused a lot of anti-Christian discrimination.

Now the same thing happening in Syria but with Druze instead of Christians.

This country is going nowhere. Its exhausting

And people will reply to me. Leave.

Well of course. I was abroad. I had to come back because of my situation.
It is not luxury to have a functiononal country with any semblance of a real economy, it is a necessity. We need it.

In fact having a functional country means I can actually leave in the first place.

I have lost hope in this shitty place w really

r/Lebanon Debate on Bans and Moderation

The Banning & Moderating Situation

Hey everyone, so a few days ago I got banned for 24h by one (or all) of the moderators for apparently being mean, confrontational and having too many downvotes on my comments.
Don't worry this is not a vent or a rant, no beef, but I thought I'd address it openly and see what happens.

I know I'm an asshole and definitely not the nicest of the bunch here, but then again this is not a popularity contest, I am not here to farm karma nor start a political party and have you all sign up.
I know the mods are doing great work in managing the sub and I get that I can be mean and straight up in your face confrontational sometimes, but I don't see why that's grounds for a ban to begin with. I engage with this sub, and I confront opinions and sound like a shitty contrarian asshole because I enjoy challenging opinions and thinking critically about things and bantering about and I think that should be perfectly fine as long as there are no insults, no personal attacks and you're staying respectful. I disagree with so many people here, and probably with a lot of the mods as well, on a lot of issues and on a lot of language they use to describe these issues, and I have always thought that as long as we are not insulting each others, then the floor is there to engage however we want.

Yet, the moderator(s) deemed my comments and engagement as confrontational and not bringing anything positive to the sub and decided to exercise a ban and banned me from messaging the mods for 28 days, which I think is rather childish, somehow a bit personal and excessive. I don't know who was the mod that spoke with me and I don't care to know, but the bottom line is:

I really wish you wouldn't micro manage sentiments and opinions here, especially because it is turning into a huge echo chamber and a circle jerk of rightwing opinions where posts and the conversations around them become so predictable and more and more aggressive.

If my comments are generating a lot of down votes because people dislike my opinions, so be it, again I...

Lebanese Chess Champions Barred from Arab Championship

Morocco bans Lebanese chess champions from participating in the Arab Championship

Morocco banned 10 of Lebanon’s chess champions in the children’s category from participating in the Arab Championship held there, after the state refused to grant them travel visas. Authorities stated that “the family knows the reason”
I contacted the family of two of the players, who stated that the visa refusals were due to the children's Shia affiliation — a circumstance reportedly shared by the other eight affected players
