All my life, I was told that I wasnโt masculine, someone who never took the initiative, and waited for someone else to take me by the hand and guide me. As a guy, hearing that from others, both men and women alike, was a huge hit to my insecurities.
As I end my high-school life, I move to a new town for university, where I knew nobody. It would be a new start for me. Having entered university and even made some friends, I eased into a more assertive version of myself, speaking up more, expressing myself more, even sometime pushing boundaries without realizing. It was an act to be more manly.
I even got myself a date coming up, with you. I wanted to put myself out there and really express my masculinity and treat you right, to prove to myself Iโm not that same person from before.
As we met up, and got to know each other, it was almost immediately clear to you that I was putting up a front. As if my behavior was a little overbearing, you quickly put me in my place, calling me out. Instead of allowing me to take charge of the conversation, you instead asserted your control and ensured that you were the one in charge, leading the conversations, and the date itself. At that moment, I realized, I couldnโt compete, and perhaps, this was the dynamic that was meant to be.
