I look at all MGS as "experimental" some worked really well some didn't
MGS 1 for example was "almost" perfect
2 felt way more innovating with it's writing. 3 felt way better with it's gameplay.
MGS 4 had one major plot issue

MGS 4 was fun but it's biggest innovation was graphics and utilizing the PS3 to it's fullest
ONLY game to use it's full 1080P blu-ray resolution and texture sizes.
Everything else was 720P

MGS 3 was basically the only game to surpass MGS on the Playstation 1
It was sorta the same experience but better gameplay and graphics.
