In those bright days when grassland realms would bloom,
And tales of shadow seemed a distant doom,
A young pup watched his father, fierce and grand,
And dreamed to be a knight across the land.
He thought of glory, of the weak protected,
Of love and praise that heroes see reflected,
Yet never knew how cruel the world could be,
Nor guessed the weight of grim responsibility.
Then came the fateful night, the skies turned black,
The King of grassland and shadows in attack.
The father charged, the son flew close behind,
A song of noble deeds within his mind.
But no sweet ballad echoed through the mud—
He only found the filth of war and blood.
For there, as death unbarred its icy gates,
He saw his father fall to hollow fates.
A sudden ice, a paralyzing dread,
And all his vaunted knightly spirit fled,
Leaving a shattered heart, an empty cry,
And bitter numbness underneath the sky.
When darkness broke, the kingdom cheered his name,
But Equesentus only wept in shame.
He lowered his gaze, he hid his golden eyes,
For enemy fire was kinder than their cries.
He fled the squares, the crowds, the roaring street,
To seek the alleys where the shadows meet,
To hide away in corners, dim and grim,
So no one's praise could ever burden him.
And in the quiet of his lonely state,
A whisper mocks the choosing of his fate:
“Look at the coward trembling in the sun...
Is this the knight you wished to become?”
