Did prophet Nathan gave a wrong counsel at first to David to agree in building the ark and then God told him that David shall not build the ark? So is prophet Nathan committed mistake?
Nathan's first statement was not willful error - but human approval.
The timing - however - was not the LORD's Will.
Nathan did faithfully deliver the correction later on.

“David proposed to build a house for God, in which he could place the sacred ark, and to which all Israel should come to worship. The Lord informed David, through his prophet, that he should not build the house, but that he should have a son who should build a house for God. “I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men. But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.” God manifests pity and compassion for the weakness of erring man, and promises, if he transgress, to punish him; and if he repent, to forgive him.” 1SP 387.1
“So when in the providence of God David came to the throne of Israel, "and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies" (2 Sam. vii. 1), it was in his heart to build a temple to the Lord. At first the prophet Nathan, speaking his own words, said to him, "Go, do all that is in thine heart," but afterwards he spoke the word of the Lord, and said that David should not build it. At that time the Lord said to David:- {February 4, 1897 EJW, PTUK 67.5}
