Yearlings will gradually become independent, spending increasing amounts of time at the edges of their natal pack's territory. They may also participate less in pack activities and make exploratory excursions before ultimately leaving. Males are more likely to disperse and travel long distances. Dispersal may occur alone or alongside siblings and familiar pack members. Such groups are usually unstable and often dissolve once partners are found.

Some packs may tolerate a dispersal passing through their territory, particularly if it avoids core areas and does not remain for long. Not all dispersers successfully find a partner, however, and some may spend months or even years living alone before an opportunity arises. Players can temporarily return to their natal pack if they fail to secure food, territory, or social stability elsewhere. Close relatives often remain tolerant of returning dispersers.

Disputes commonly arise because territory controls prey availability, denning sites, travel corridors, and the predictability of resources. When a territory can no longer reliably support a pack due to prey decline, seasonal shifts, or population pressure, it becomes contested.

Not all pack members engage in physical disputes. Prime-aged adults and opponents of the same gender are most likely to participate. Before contact, packs form loose confrontation fronts involving parallel pacing, stiffened posture, raised hackles, horizontal tails, and teeth exposure. If a retreat does not occur, players may initiate probing attacks.

Packs typically maintain territory centered around areas that provide reliable access to prey, water, resting sites, and denning areas. While not every portion of their territory is actively defended, core areas receive more protection. Encounters between neighboring packs may be tolerated in peripheral areas.

Prior to a litter arriving, packs may travel extensively throughout their territory while reinforcing boundaries and monitoring resources. Following the arrival of pups, territory use becomes more concentrated around the den and later the rendezvous site. During this period, defense of the immediate denning area becomes a priority, and packs may respond more aggressively to intruders near pups than they would elsewhere. Members may establish their territory and later shift it to follow prey movement.
