What does the poilus emoji mean?

A classic French soldier with a hilariously squashed face.

This emoji features a 'Poilu'โ€”a nickname for French infantrymen during World War Iโ€”with his face comically distorted into a squashed, wide-eyed expression. It is a popular meme-style emoji used in Discord servers to express confusion, disbelief, or to mockingly react to a bizarre statement. The contrast between the serious historical uniform and the absurd, edited face makes it a staple for ironic humor.
