What does the Smile emoji mean?

The ultimate expression of forced, awkward, or suppressed pain.

This is the iconic 'Hide the Pain Harold' or 'Overly Attached/Awkward Smile' kid meme, often used to convey a sense of 'I am dying inside but trying to be polite.' It is a staple in Discord servers for reacting to bad news, awkward situations, or cringe-worthy moments where you just have to smile through the discomfort.

When to use it

  • Reacting to an incredibly awkward social situation
  • Showing forced politeness during a bad take
  • Expressing internal pain behind a fake smile
  • Responding to someone saying something very cringey
