What does the swear emoji mean?

When you're so frustrated that you need a string of symbols to do the talking.

The :swear: emoji is a classic representation of censored frustration, featuring a yellow face with an angry expression and a black bar covering the mouth with various symbols. It draws inspiration from traditional comic book tropes where characters use symbols like '@#$%' to represent profanity. It is a staple in Discord and Slack servers for expressing annoyance, rage, or a 'censored' outburst without actually using explicit language.

When to use it

  • Expressing frustration after losing a game
  • Reacting to an annoying or rude comment
  • Showing anger at a bad situation
  • Censoring a fake outburst for humor
