Summary
In the Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server, members collaborate to refine competitive teams for the VGC doubles format. This discussion focuses on optimizing bulky playstyles, improving lead strategies, and selecting effective items for core Pokémon like Kommo-o and Aegislash. By sharing team pastes and box lists, the community provides actionable advice to help players climb the ladder without relying on standard meta picks.
Team: https://pokepast.es/50ad68e989f8c3fe
goal: im trying to make my team strong enough to climb lader a bit while there are pokemon im willing to swap out however i dont wanna use certain super meta mon such as charizard or sneaseler etc
the vibe of the team is pokemon i could see myself using on my own champion team so i wanna lean heavy into pokemon i like
Stratagy: i generally like bulkier pokemon i suppose but im willing to try a variety of playstyles
Help needed: mostly team building advice and strategy improvements like how to pick which 4 to bring who to lead with etc also stat spreads
please
So I have a few questions
1. What's the main gameplan?
2. You don't have a mega, so what ones do you like and would build around?
Singles, or doubles? What do you currently have in your box? (If showdown, let us know)
doubles and ill send a box list in a bit answering the first question first
why is the moo holding white herb
ye, print is totally fine btw, for the box
so right now "gameplan" isnt exactly concrete but i generally try to use
klefki to cripple scary leads
corviknight to tailwind support and wall
chandelure as a strong fast special offence that helps deal with screens
milotic as a bulky control with icy and muddy to debuff sometimes i run mirror coat over dragon tail for a strong counter
kommo-o is a pokemon that i like and wanna use but im still trying to figure out how to use it effectively as i keep running into ice or fairies that shut me down quick
aegislash is my primary phys attacker and i use him for wide guard which has been rather nice to use
clanging scales hes been dying alot and i didnt want the defence drop
also i havent gotten all the items yet so i just put what fit best from what i had
citrus is more reliable since you're running a set up move that sacs you're health
also Sinischa would fit well giving it back some Hp
Yeah ok that's fair
Thing is, these pokemon don't really synergise well with each other. For example a Garchomp/Zard team would almost certainly destroy this because you don't have a reliable way of killing Zard
I recommend replacing Kings shield for protect
oh is protect better?
yes because you don't want to give gambit a defiant boost
ahhhh
This team can be good with a few changes, but you need to decide on an actual direction you want to take it
Cause currently it seems like "yeah these pokemon are here and do stuff" without really complimenting each other
what they said
i mostly do nuzlockes and some competitve semi battles with what i get from those so im not super familar with building from scratch
That's ok! We're here to help
I think you're better off going with the Iron defense Body press set on Kommoo because the clang... something something is basically just worse Archaludon
Nothing to be ashamed of
we all start somewhere
other pokemon i have and would be interested in using:
Drampa
Raichu
zoruark (both)
hydreigon
blastoise
ampharos
skarmory
lucario
toxicroak
leafeon
Mamoswine
Dragalge
toxapex
Mawile
Reuniclus
araquanid
Electross
Metagross
Metacham
lycanrock
Hatterene
Rhyperior
Mudsdale
sableye
Scolipede
mimikyu
hisuian Arcanine
infernape
lopunny
Hisuian samurott
sceptile
torterra
salazzle
Gliscor
Runerigus
Grimmsnarl
Glimmora
roserade
armarouge
hisuian goodra
Greninja
whimiscot
Tyranitar
i think this covers most of what i have not including current team members
oof so no sinischa huh
i can try to pull for one im will just havent pulled it uyet
i was going to suggest going for a boomburst set with clang soul
ohh that sounds good but will that ko my own mon?
that's why i said you have no sinischa
Sinischa would heal and be immune to boomburst
i have some quick tickets lemme see if i can pull it any other mon i should keep an eye out for?
hmmm
a Fairy type maybe Sylveon or maybe Frosslass as your mega
Sylvoen always good
i got vaniluxe ceruledge archaladon volcarona and annihilape from the pull as un owned mon that i would be interested in
i actually have a sylveon i dont dislike it its just super common but i can run it if it helps the team
frostlass is off limits for me as its a friends ace and we dont really like over lap for star memebers
oh fair enough I guess
damn unfortunate
it would help with aurora vail and another normal immune
yeah my chandelure was actually a direct response to his frostlass as infiltrator and its type lines up nicely into it
anyways i like volcarona and ceruledge most in this pull but are one of the others a definitively better pick?
countering ghost with ghost is really risky
hold on I'm doing chores so i can't really think rn
brb
kk
oh i dont know how viable this is but ive always liked phasing moves like dragon tail whirlwind and roar
i think playing a bulky hazzard team that
switchs out bad matchups
and sets up or sweeps in good ones
while also getting stealth rocks or other hazards to help with that
i think it could be a lot of fun but i dont know if thats an actual strategy or just a fun idea that wouldnt work
Hazard in doubles is almost always a no go. There are too few turns to capitalize on their advantage. The ways to make them work don't really fit with your available pool :/
Phasing is nice vs mons that focus on self boost, though!
dang i was reallly hopeful there i was thinking hippowdon would have been a solid pick for it
The only sand setter really used is Tyranitar, and it runs zero hazard moves.
The mons that set up hazards, end up doing it with attacks. Like Kleavor with Stone Axe or Samurott Hisui with its edge thingy
Your mentality is pretty spot on for singles, though. I assume that is what you are most used to? Bulky headaches that set hazards, give statuses and phase is a tried and true BSS strategy.
ohh ill build that for my dedicated singles set then when i get around to it
I am not at all "in touch" with that meta, but I do know that the team I use to speedrun to ultra ball for ez money gets destroyed by hazards. Lots of u-turns, volt switches, flip turns...
aite back

So You want to make Kommoo your ace here right so we'll need to build around it
yeah ive been interested in using it for a while now
there's a few sets you can probably pull off
Either Iron defense
Belly drum
Or clang soul but it's a little worse because there's no throat spray and you don't have sinischa
both drum and soul really benefit from Sinistcha ):
i just did my pulls for today and im flat broke rn but i may be able to catch one or trade for one in home what game is it from?
gen 9
SV
It's 9th generation, so scarlet and violet. Specifically the Teal Mask DLC.
There's lots more you can work on before this fine tune aspect, though
If you are free to play, you'll always end up running your team in a suboptimal version for a little bit.
Me😭
didnt buy the dlc unfortunatly ill ask my buddy to catch me one
oh yeah, it's a pretty easy fix if you actually have that possibility lol
i bought the home and champions box expansions because i realized real quick that i had more pokemon i liked than avalible slots
I made master ball last season with a scuffed rain team LOL
This season, made it with a pretty optimized trick room team, but I got them slowly.
If you have the spare cash, the quality of life increase is gigantic 😄 I chose to save since I am not that deep in the VGC hole
Yeah i made MB3 just because i was lucky to pull a big 6 team
but now I'm running a Mega Meganium team and i just reached MB3
we stan mega sol queen
I hate her
but i respect her
she was in my last season roster!
She's actually so busted low-key
i (someone who believes myself to be decent enough at pokemon) have been floundering in pokeball tier with my current team for like 10 matches so ive come here for help im actually stunned at how bad im doing rn
Team building is hard already
especially since you gave yourself some massive restrictions
totally normal, honestly. Massacring the games can be done with any team with minimal optimization. Then you get to Champions, and everyone has the perfect mons and copying tried and true lists? Yeah, the struggle is pretty real on the whiplash.
also it seems like im more suited to singles potentially with my idea playstyles tho i like doubles more i think
My friend had been trying to get by with a "mons I like and items that are cool" strat, she was hard stuck in pokeball. We had a 2 hour chat about mons she had, basic strats, and made a simple but dangerous team? She immediately 4 win streaked into great ball
no backseat gaming at all! We were hella proud of her
back on topic
once you get a sinischa
You can either go with like
A Bulky Belly drum set
with Drain punch
Dragon claw/rock slide
and protect
with a Sitrus berry
for right now should the tea ghost replace klefki on my current team and is sableye something that can be used in the mean time?
Sinistcha running one of 3 berries; flying, dark or ghost resist.
Very different uses between tea and the other two mentioned, but Sableye is a fierce support. Its moveset depends on the rest of the team.
And he is immune to prankster because of dark type, so big plus.
You need a mega on your team and i recommend mega glimora
This dragon set is really, really good.
It helps deal with fairy types and Charizard
fairy destroys Kommoo so yeah
and you can one shot and out speed any Charizard with mega glimora
metor beam?
no power gem
ohhh
Would you consider Mamoswine with scarf as a decent check, Aro?
Adaptability power gem destroys even the bulkiest Charizard
and you out speed it which is nice
check to what?
Zard, Aero, venu
Specifically sun Venu.
Ehhh no
not really
You'll still be outspeed by venu and die to solar beam

i think i can do glimmora i just need to earn the mega stone cash for it rq
and if you run thick fat to be neutral to fire you run the risk of being shut down by intimidate
It is pretty solid, worth the points.
Mamo is a good mon and can work but it's a risky counter
Back to glimora
probably run Max speed max special with 2 HP since you need it as a wall breaker
with sludge bomb
Power gem
spiky shield (it gets that right? i forgot)
and either Earth power for arch
or energy ball for swampert
Does get shield, arch is a bit more common, I think.
ouh yeah sinischa
Just run the basic set of
Matcha
Life dew
Rage powder
protect/shadow ball
nice choice
glimm is awesome
Also run sound proof on Kommoo so you're immune to fairy hyper voice Sylveon
And perish song
Next you'll probably want some speed control because Kommoo is not fast enough on its own if you're running belly drum
Icy wind Milotic is nice if your opponent is not running one of the 3 abilities: contrary (you boost the speed), defiant (attack boost) or competitive (special attack boost)
Tailwind is safe apart from trick room.
ouh right i forgot to give a set for boomburst
so the team so far is
kammo-o
Milotic
Sinistea
glimmora
Gimme a second I'm cutting my nails lol
nice i won some singles matches and got the mega stone
what mon did you end up getting from your pulls again
Wait do you have kingambit
Or talon flame
dang it
i JUST saw a talonflame and got a ceruledge instead
Talon shouldn't be hard to catch and transfer over
also no kingamit but i also dont like that mon very much same vibe as sneseler or basculegion to me bit too meta
unfortunate
but well here

prob something like this
it's not perfect and the evs aren't exact because idk how to convert it in showdown
let me know if you have some questions about it
also should probably get someone else to look this over just for more opinions
im liking this for the most part my questions are
is mamo absolute? i love the mon but my friend has it as well
is there any room for any of the old mon on my team such as milotic or aegislash because this team is def what i want for kammo-o and im tots gonna use it but it left everyone else behind
and how should i pick who to bring match to match are there any dedicated leads?
It's there mostly for Garchomp because both Kommoo and Glimora are weak to it
also a check for archaludon even if it's a little risky
Oblivious also helps against incin and threatens it with high horse
same with sneasler
Milotic can take the place of Sableye in the belly drum set so it discourages intimidate and can help with speed control with tailwind
i mean icy wind
yeah i think ill try that
for leads It would be Talon and whatever is most threatening
Like against whimsicott you can heal Talon mamo to completely stop tailwind from being set up using Brave bird and ice shard to kill it through sash
this leads also works against Sneasler and Inci
since you can quick guard stopping fake out and OHKO most of them with high horsepower
Or garchomp leads with ice crash
if you have any other questions ask away
and again probably ask for more opinions
for now ill try climbing with this and tell ya how it goes
still gotta wait on that sinistea
good luck
