Oreon VR: A Free, Linux-Based VR Platform

Today, we are thrilled to officially announce Oreon VR, a new project dedicated to building a Linux-based virtual reality operating system. Oreon VR is a truly free virtual reality platform free from corporate tracking, forced ecosystems, and restrictive digital storefronts, where your data stays with you and is just yours.

Currently we are working on support with the Oculus Go first, as its an easier device to work with because of its 3DoF tracking system. But fret not, we will plan on adding more hardware to support as the opportunities come along to do so. We are in the early stages (as shown in the trailer), so a development timeline is not sure as of now.

If you have any questions about Oreon VR, feel free to ping @ReDev and @sk1lld in #general, and we will answer questions to the best of our ability.

Thank you to @2elevation and the Oreon Community for the opportunity to work on Oreon VR.

Oreon Project Expands Team Tools Beyond Discord

Community & team changes

As a part of the rollout of Discord's ID verification, we will be making our recommended team discussion & planning platform Matrix and Taiga instead of exclusively Discord. Discord will still be an option for team members to hold discussions, but will not be the default/only recommendation going forward.

Our Discord server will obviously still be fully open for public chat and the team.

Don't forget about our Fluxer server, which is still a solid option for those who wish to exit the Discord platform. Both our Matrix Homeserver and our Fluxer server are bridged here, but uptime may vary on the bridges.

I am also working on restructuring our roles, making it more clear who on the team does what and what codebase said role belongs to. More updates on that will be coming later.

To join the Oreon team, you may #open-a-ticket or message me @brandonlester:matrix.org on Matrix, and we can discuss the process. Barrier to entry is low but you must have some experience.

Oreon 11 Progress Update — Oreon Community

Updates & what we're up to now

Hey everyone, I'd like to share some updates with what my team and I have been working on over the past couple months.

Progress on Oreon 11

Progress on Oreon 11 is good, the OS is much more functional than it was during early beta, and I am actually daily driving it on some of my devices, and it works surprisingly well aside from a few minor issues. The first-party features such as Oreon System Manager, Oreon Defense, and other UN-announced features are nearly finished, but need some polish. The only thing that we're currently having difficulty with is maintaining the package repo for Oreon 11. There are a lot of outdated packages (not so bad that it makes it insecure or unusable), but its kind of a mess right now. We also have a couple holes (dependency issues) to fix before release, but we're working on making automation have a bigger play in bumping packages so we can spend more time testing than maintaining. One way or another, we are still on track for an early 2027 release. No dates/months are confirmed yet because distro development is quite unpredictable sometimes, so that means Oreon 11 will likely be a surprise drop on some random day in early 2027. Most people dont really give a crap about Oreon 11, but once you see if for yourself, you will understand how truly huge the release is going to be, especially with the upcoming betas. Speaking of beta, more beta builds for Oreon 11 will be releasing in the coming weeks and months with more and more changes & improvements, leading to the final release.

New Oreon 11 beta builds will be dropping very soon with major improvements and fixes. Next build should be the first Oreon 11 build that is at least mostly daily drivable, and feels a few steps closer to the finished product that we will see next year.

@Oreon Ping

As of August 21, 2026, our restructuring plan has been majorly interrupted by the Oreon 11 delay, meaning our operation revivals may take longer than expected.

Don't expect things to get better until around mid-2027 assuming we release Oreon 11 before that.

While things may look bad, I know things will get better eventually, and it takes time.

We will continue to keep everyone posted.

Oreon 11 Release Delayed to 2027

Oreon 11 Release Delayed

Hey , as much as I hate to make this announcement, Oreon 11 is officially confirmed to be delayed to 2027. I tried to recruit people into our team last week, and posted it across several platforms. What I got in return was ignorance or spam asking me to pay for some "recruiting service." My lookout for new team members brought a total of ZERO new team members.

At this point, we have no other option than to delay Oreon 11, because there is NO WAY we're making the October release deadline with me doing all the work. Otherwise we'd end up with a buggy or unstable OS. We need at least 1-2 months of proof that Oreon 11 can be maintained on schedule in the beta phase without breaking things, so that when the release comes, we can continue that operation smoothly. I can't maintain a repository of over 20,000 packages alone. Nor do we have a 100% conflict-free Oreon 11 repo yet. Not to mention, our flagship features for Oreon 11 are nowhere near complete.

This is really frustrating, and I wish I could find a solution. I tried EVERYTHING I COULD to make the original September 2025 release date, then it got delayed to March 2026, then again to July 2026, and again to August 2026, then again to October 2026, and off we go into 2027.

Sorry for those who have been waiting, but there's nothing I can do to make it happen this year.
