It's called quantum computing because it seems to exist as both a threat and not a threat at the same time.
But @vic4wong has a hot take: it might also be the trigger for flippening.
Victor: "But the question I've always had is: why hasn't the flippening happened? So if this is the truth, there's way more economic activity on Ethereum than Bitcoin. In fact, it can't exist on Bitcoin. So why hasn't this happened?
Part of my answer right now is network effects and inertia. But I will go on the record and have a prediction that what could cause the flippening in the future is quantum.
And the reason it could cause it is that we've been having lots of conversations with various people about the rate of quantum and how quickly it could affect breaking various encryption algorithms.
I have said this before, but I do fundamentally believe that I think culturally Ethereum has a better culture in order to adapt to a big change like that than, say, something like Bitcoin. Like, for example, the Ethereum Foundation, Vitalik, they've been working on quantum-resistant encryption already.
And whether it's three years out or ten years out, I'm not going to make a prediction on that. But I think that is something that could move that very, very quickly."
