Necromancy is one of the most fascinating subjects in the history of occult belief because it sits at the intersection of death, religion, fear, grief, prophecy, and humanity's desire to know what cannot ordinarily be known.
To understand it properly, we have to look beyond the modern image of a sorcerer raising skeletons. Historically, necromancy often meant something much more specific: seeking information from the dead, or attempting to obtain knowledge through a relationship with the deceased. It has taken different forms across ancient Mediterranean religions, medieval European magical texts, and nineteenth-century spiritualism.
One important distinction before we begin: these traditions document what people believed, practiced, wrote about, or claimed to experience. They do not establish that the dead can actually communicate with the living.
