Prior to a foal being born, mares will briefly depart from their band (remaining nearby). Within 10 minutes in-game, they can gradually guide their foal back to the group. Mares commonly limit interaction between band members and their newborn foals.
Mares will not tolerate their foal wandering too far. If separated, they become defensive or vocal. Familiar mares are often tolerated at a respectful distance, but physical contact is usually limited. Dominant or assertive mothers can be overly precise in their protection. Other band members are more likely to respect their space. If warnings are ignored, mares can escalate to displacement.

Higher-ranking mares can retain priority access to resources. Bonded mares may provide indirect support if a foaling mother is under distress, such as bachelor harassment or displacement attempts.

Mothers are expected to remain close and protect their offspring. Defensive behavior and displacement can occur, especially during the early stages of a foal's life. Another band member will temporarily look after the foal if the dam is not present.
Corrective Behaviors:
- # โข Mares can turn, pause, body block, or step toward the foal as a correction.
- # โข Brief nudges to prompt movement.
- # โข Mares are able to lower their head, pin their ears, kick toward the air, and stomp.
