Lebanon’s Jebneh Darfiyyeh Cheese Heritage

Food Heroes detail | World Food Day | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Anthony Rahayel

“We are inventing more, exporting more. We are doing things we’ve never done before.”

Lebanon

On a recent sunny Tuesday, some 1 900m up a mountain in Northern Lebanon, Anthony Rahayel wound his way up a narrow road in search of cheese.

His destination was Btelaya, one of the last remaining villages that produce Jebneh Darfiyyeh, and home to a family that’s been making it for 140 years.

“I spent 24 hours with the shepherd, watching how the cheese is made from start to end,” Anthony says excitedly. “I even went to the cave they put the cheese in. It’s a one-month process of aging it, drying it.”

It was the first time the whole process had been documented on camera, he says.

It’s these moments he lives for, showing the cultural and culinary beauty of Lebanon to people around the world, including his compatriots. He loves to show locals new things about their own country, he says, and for the diaspora worldwide to take pride and interest in their heritage.

“It is the best cuisine in the world – no competition,” says Anthony, who credits the diversity of influences left by the Romans, the Ottomans and the French, and Lebanon’s key position along the old Silk Road.

“Our country also has many days of good weather, so we have the greatest veggies. Everything you eat here is natural and tastes amazing.”

Since 2012, the dentist-turned-food-blogger has built a loyal following showing that richness on his Youtube channel and website No Garlic No Onions. He also produces short features on Lebanese TV.

He’s keen to dispel Lebanon’s old image of a country marked by conflict and economic crises, he says. Still, crisis also shapes food culture, and not always negatively. Separated by Civil war, communities fostered unique food habits that reflect the religious and cultural roots of those who settled there, explains Anthony, especially in the villages.

The recent economic crisis, meanwhile, has given an unexpected jolt to Lebanon’s food industry.

Lebanese French: A Living Part of Lebanon’s Heritage

French is going strong among Lebanese

I was at the airport in Istanbul, and I noticed many of the lebanese where mixing french with the rest of our lebanese language -- especially parents with their kids. It's great to see we are preserving our culture, especially since our language is objectively considered to be one of the most beautiful ones (this I have been told by people from north africa and the gulf) out of the \~7000.

Don't let some leftist / pan-arabist from Syria, Palestine, USA convince you that we are "colonised". No 7abibi, a language is a language, regardless of it's origin, it's the heritage that our lebanese ancestors left us to preserve.

ISP Bandwidth Throttling?

Anyone here on OGERO or IDM fiber experiencing bandwidth throttling at night?

Been noticing a significant drop from 350Mbps during the day to 25Mbps at night despite not being on an unlimited plan. I subscribe to the 1,000GB per month package without any of the unlimited night/weekend services to ensure I get what I pay for.

Things run perfectly well during the day, but drop once it gets to 6-7pm.

Why Many Lebanese Have Lost Sympathy Over the War

The real reason why many lebanese have lost sympathy

The war of isnad happened for 11 months almost a year during that time lebanese people that didn't want war were called traitors and zionists disgusting words to tell your fellow Lebanese simply because they wanted to live in peace.

Nasrallah said he will continue the war as long as the war in gaza continues and he will not stop.

So it would be understandable that people that were shamed for 11 months and called all sorts of bad things by their fellow Lebanese that were so exited for war to not care as much especially if they tried so hars to warn if not even say I told you so in a salty way as things unfolded.

Also things like we want war and you don't have a say in it were said. If we don't have a say in it how can we be held responsible for the isnad choice that we weren't consulted by.

Let’s talk about Shark Tank

Quick reflections

  • most of the companies don’t even know the numbers. The nose strip guys were a disaster. So unprepared.

  • the guy with the China trading platform was completely unprofessional. How did he pass the filter? There’s surely a lot better and more presentable entrepreneurs.

  • I liked the waste recycling guy and Mandy’s shoes. Nice ideas although Mandy doesn’t have an operational company. Happy she got a deal.

  • The judges: Maroun - very neutral. Georges - comes off as quite arrogant with his remarks although they’re usually right but very negative aura. Christine - supportive and respectful. Hassan - also supportive and always trying to help, the most active. Alain - the voice of reason, most reasonable and pragmatic and straight to the point.

Lebanon

OliveTree

SouthernLebanon

During fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, Nouhad was forced to flee her home in southern Lebanon.

While others speak of loss and destruction, the 81-year-old speaks of her beloved olive grove - her life’s work and a symbol of resilience amid the chaos.

But when the Israeli military rains down white phosphorus, burning her beloved trees, she must confront the unbearable truth of losing not just her land, but a part of herself.

Shifting Roots is a documentary short about memory, belonging and the roots that ground us and hold us together, even in conflict.

A film by Angie Mrad.

Lebanon Olive Grove Documentary: A Story of Resilience

How do you deal with a resting bitch face

Very random question but for people who have a resting angry/sad face and especially girls, how do you deal with it ?
A lot of people assume that I look mean/ rude just solely based on my look. Idk what part of my face gives off this vibe but everyone thinks im sad or just a straight up bitch lol.
Plus I’m a very quiet person and kind of awkward so I get that I can come off as weird or rude sometimes because of my personality.

Also, has any of you gone to Algeria? How much did the flight and visa cost? And how did you do it (via agency for example)?

Lebanon Discusses School Sports and Breaking News

Sports in schools

I have been wondering for a while, after I moved abroad to study and met a lot of people from different countries, something that striked me is how everyone is/was always engaged in a different sport at school (even multiple), from the obvious ones like football/basketball/tennis to niche things like cross country and frisbee.

When i was in secondary school all we did was 2 séances of P.E per week and all we did was stretch, run and probably play football or something. The only times where we had organized teams and games was when we needed to raise money for our grad party.

Was it the same in other schools? I feel like our education system puts so little importance in sports education and participation, and it's not like you need crazy amounts of funding.

It's not a surprise our national teams are shit, majority of ternagers/young adults live shit lifestyles if they do not go to the gym atleast, and that sport is so ridiculed in lebanon and treated as a waste of time.

Do we even have national school competitions? Maybe I was in the wrong school but something as basic as this should be worked on. It also promotes national and societal unity which is something that we severly lack

Each autumn, the mountains come alive to the rhythm of #apples. From #Aqoura to #Laqlouq, and through #Tannourine, the harvest keeps the heart of an entire region beating. An ancestral tradition that farmers strive to pass down to their children.
Here, the apple is more than just a fruit; it’s a symbol of prosperity. And you, what’s your favorite apple?

Hezbollah’s 2006 Mistake and the Cost of War

If Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah regretted 2006, why did Hezbollah repeat the same mistake again and how many times must we pay for Hezbollah’s “miscalculations”?

In August 2006, shortly after the war with Israel ended, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah publicly admitted that Hezbollah “We did not think, even one percent, that the capture would lead to a war at this time and of this magnitude. You ask me, if I had known on July 11 ... that the operation would lead to such a war, would I do it? I say no, absolutely not,"

Nearly two decades later, history repeated itself.

During the most recent conflict, Hezbollah again opened a front with Israel without national consensus. The result was once again devastating. If Hezbollah acknowledged that 2006 was a mistake, then what do we call this? At some point, repeating the same mistake of such a magnitude can not be tolerated and accepted by the people.

So my question to Hezbollah supporters is, at what point does these mistakes becomes reckless and unacceptable and how can the latest war be justified?

Syria after all the destruction, is constantly oppressing any attempt to destabilise the country, they’re going to publicly prosecute all the Assad regime criminals and bring justice, they’ve done a clean election in speed time ( they admit it wasn’t as perfect as they wanted ), managed to get funds and support by sticking up to their words.

W nehna shou? Maskhara, Joseph Aoun turned out to be a great disappointment and Nawaf turned out to have big balls yet still unable to move forward so still hake.

We are going nowhere guys, I put this sad pic I saw on a report of kids of Hezb terrorist who happened to be holding the pagers. Life ruined and they have in the background this token about their injuries are what brought victory.
