The Rogue Syndicate Book Club Kickoff

Summary

The Rogue Syndicate launches a book club process covering monthly genre voting, book nominations, final voting, and a week-4 discussion night. April's genre is fantasy with suggestions due by Mar 22 and reading starting Apr 1. The announcement explains steps for nominations, voting rules, in-channel book forums, and how the community will pick the next title.

Original Post

A brief overview on how we are going to start book club for the time being, if we change anything, we can decide that in here and update the main post as well.

I'd like to start by...
1) picking out a genre for the month by vote,
2) then we can all throw some ideas into the basket that we'd love to read in this genre (can be one you have read or one you're looking forward to reading, etc.),
3) we'll put it up for vote again (no voting for your own, max two books selected per person)
4) we'll start reading the 1st of the next month (so we are starting this one in April)
5) the book will have its own forum within this channel, you can start talking about it as you're reading, or wait until you're all done
6) have a book club night in week 4 of the month (we'll take a poll later for this) where we can all hop in โ โ (https://discord.com/channels/1341210009052385332/1341556410336542731) to talk about it together, and finally...
7) announce the next book for the following month!

If you have any questions, thoughts, suggestions, etc. -- please feel free to DM me!

Sorry I left off horror on accident, added it by request, can you resubmit your vote? ๐Ÿ˜… I left it open for you to choose multiple genres you'd be open to reading in.

If you're interested in joining book club for April, our genre is officially FANTASY, as chosen by vote. Please drop all suggestions for FANTASY books in this chat by END OF DAY Saturday, March 22 to ensure adequate voting time prior to the reading month starting (April).

(If you're not interested in book club, just ignore this ping! Thanks for your patience, friends!)

I bought the Kindle and the audiobook version, waiting to make sure I like it before I buy the physical. But this is actually one of the books that I pick up every time I walk into Barnes & Noble, so I'm sure I'll purchase my book trophy (and the two books following it) soon enough haha.

Sorry -- was trying to help but didn't know how to select to open multiple answers for you. Please re-select the genres you're interested in -- and YES, this time you can select more than one.

We need to break the tie before we choose a book! Help narrow it down, pick ONE!

Reply

WAS IT GOOD?! It was just in a Audible 2 for 1 credit sale.

Reply

Thatโ€™s a choice haha

1000% agree, way better than doomscrolling. But donโ€™t be so lost in bettering yourself that you forget fiction books allow your brain to create, dream, and most importantly decompress because it takes you out of your present time. I give myself scattered 15 minutes chunks throughout the day for both (as a break from work, because I donโ€™t actually have time to read otherwise, especially lately).

You selected Fantasy as the next book for book club -- now let's pick a book to read! The vote is above, the descriptions of the books are below! I also included page numbers this time, so we're not shockingly surprised again. Voting ends the 25th around 4:30PM EST.

  1. "Nettle & Bone" by T. Kingfisher (2022)
    Pages: 272
A dark fairy tale where Marra, a convent-raised princess, embarks on a quest to save her sister from an abusive prince. With the help of a dust-wife, a reluctant fairy godmother, and a demon-possessed chicken, she faces impossible tasks and deadly challenges.

  2. "Legends & Lattes" by Travis Baldree (2022)
    Pages: 316
After years of adventuring, orc Viv retires to open a coffee shop in a city unfamiliar with the beverage. As she builds her new life, she encounters challenges that test her resolve and the bonds she forms with her new community.

  3. "Half a Soul" by Olivia Atwater (2020)
    Pages: 258
In Regency-era England, Theodora Ettings has half her soul stolen by a faerie, rendering her emotionally detached. When she meets the eccentric Lord Sorcier, they delve into London's magical underworld to find a cure, uncovering dark secrets along the way.

  4. "The Bear and the Nightingale" by Katherine Arden (2017)
    Pages: 336
Set in medieval Russia, young Vasilisa defies societal norms by embracing the old spirits of the forest. As Christianity spreads and ancient magic fades, she must protect her village from dark forces that threaten to consume them.

  5. "Kingfisher" by Patricia A. McKillip (2016)
    Pages: 346
In a world where modern technology coexists with ancient magic, young Pierce Oliver leaves his coastal home to seek his destiny. His journey intertwines with knights, sorcerers, and a quest that blurs the lines between myth and reality.

  6. "The Stone Giant" by James Blaylock (1989)
    Pages: 264
In this whimsical tale, Theophile Escargot, a roguish protagonist, embarks on a series of misadventures involving elves, dwarves, and ancient stone giants. Blaylock's narrative combines elements of fantasy and steampunk, offering a light-hearted parody of the heroic quest.

  7. "The Knight" by Gene Wolfe (2004)
    Pages: 432
This novel follows an American boy transported to a magical realm, where he rapidly matures into a knight named Able. Drawing from Norse, Arthurian, and Christian mythology, Wolfe crafts a complex narrative exploring themes of honor, identity, and destiny.

Need to break this tie -- please vote for one of the two (tied) options.

Reply

I forgot to vote -- but I was going to say Nettle & Bone -- so I'll be the official tiebreaker. ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

acually horror is in the lead because of 's vote since she has already finished the current read her vote on the next genre counts for 2 votes meaning horror is in the lead with 5 votes

Reply

Read faster and you'll get the vote haha jk lol and as for sky her vote counts as 2 when it comes to choosing the next TITLE so once the genre is chooses she will get double vote on the book because she had already read it before it was chosen

Reply

Hey !! So as some of you have seen in the #channel the next genre of book is....dun dunn DUNNNNN horror! So we are talking like Steven King, Dean koontz and others of the like.

Now as a disclaimer you do not HAVE to read a book if the one choosen has triggers or anything of the sort that may make you feel uncomfortable. We want all members no matter what to feel safe and valued. You are absolutely welcome to partake in anything else regarding the book ((ie. meetings, movie nights, events)) even if you decided not to read it. I know horror/suspense/thriller tend to have more of the bloody gory stuff that somw may not like AND THATS OKAY! Your comfortability and mental wellbeing come first!

That all being said i look forward to seeing yall at the meeting on the 19th. And again we will be discussing points and topics from the current read: Until the world falls down by Jordan lynde and then watching the movie "the labyrinth" to go along with the book vibes. The current read time frame "ends" on January 9th!

Happy reading and happy holidays to all!!
