Forty days earlier, it was only a dream.
What does this refrence to
Water nukes are similar to the real life "peace nukes". What are peace nukes you ask, well they are nukes that are used for peaceful things, such as mining. This however is very dangerous. The US givernment planned to build another canal next to the sewers canal to increase its effiecency. The nukes were planned to be placed underground to make a massive crater, and the dirt on top would fall on top the the radioacitive material to block it off, neturalising the radition. This would carve through an area very close to a lot of villages. This obviously, is a very bad idea and it was a shock that this was only stopped by the senate a bit before it was planned to happen.
Now lemme leave you off with a question, what if this did go ahead, what if something disastrous did happen, would it be worth the risk.

By the 7th of April, the vision was starting to take real shape. FloPinguin and Valentino sat down to discuss the details. Four maps would feature Water Nukes in rotation: Alps, Box, Baikal and Four Islands. The explosion radius was redesigned into a more circular shape, solving the pixel problem that had plagued the early versions. The gamemode was beginning to look and feel like something that belonged in the game.
The following day, it got its first audience.
On the 8th of April, Deshack recorded the first ever Water Nukes video in a small private lobby with Valentino, Taseker and Rick132. A quiet moment that nobody realised at the time would be the start of something big.
On the 9th of April, the gamemode was officially merged into the game.
Then Ultimus Rex posted a video.
Ultimus Rex uploaded footage of himself playing Water Nukes against impossible nations. It wasn't a planned promotional moment. It just happened, and it exploded. The video crossed 20,000 views in under a week.
What followed was a flood of its own kind. In the three days after that video alone, 14 more YouTube videos, shorts and livestreams appeared. Creators who hadn't heard of Water Nukes a week earlier were now building content around it. The community wasn't just interested. It was obsessed.
Even Evan, the creator of Openfront himself, was jumping into Water Nukes livestreams.
On the 3rd of May 2026, v31 launched. Water Nukes was officially part of the game, introduced as a special modifier. What had started as a technical impossibility was now a permanent feature.
In the official v31 changelog, FloPinguin was credited for building the gamemode. Valentino was credited for the idea.
She wasn't wrong. But Valentino made the suggestion anyway.
On the 24th of March 2026, the idea went public. The suggestion began circulating and eventually caught the attention of one of the game's most capable developers: FloPinguin. His assessment matched Pilkey's almost word for word. Maps weren't meant for mid-game terrain modification. The architecture wasn't there. It couldn't be done.
And then, approximately five days later, FloPinguin built it anyway.
Nobody was more surprised than Valentino.
The first version was, to put it generously, chaotic. Bombs hit and the game froze. Explosions scattered millions of pixels along the edge of its impact. Ports couldn't be placed in the water the bombs created. It was buggy, laggy, and completely unpolished.
It was also immediately fascinating.
Games were played. Bugs were logged. Each session was smoother than the last. The gamemode wasn't ready for the world yet, but everyone who touched it could feel that it was getting there. Word began to spread quietly through the community, passed along through private games and server chats, building momentum that nobody had quite planned for.

What are Water Nukes
Water Nukes are the new gamemode in openfront, where if you nuke something, it becomes water, and it will fill up with water and u can boat across it. So far it has been very fun and execiting , and enjoyed by most people as you have seen in the polls made in the main openfront server. This has brought some chaotic games, with large rivers made between everyone and stuff like mirvs are just crazy.
How did this start
This recount is made by Valentino himself
On the night of the 23rd of March 2026, a mod named Valentino fell asleep and found himself playing Openfront on the box map. Nothing unusual about that, except for one thing. The nukes weren't destroying land. They were flooding it. Water was swallowing the map whole, reshaping everything in real time. It felt, by his own words, like a fever dream.
He woke up and did what anyone would do with an idea they couldn't shake. He told someone.
That someone was Pilkey. Her first response wasn't about game balance or map design. It was: "why do you dream of Openfront 😭"
Valentino found that very funny. But Pilkey, once past the amusement, was honest with him. She liked the idea. She just didn't think it was possible. The game's technical design didn't allow for terrain modification mid-game. The maps simply weren't built for it.
