I've been sitting on this for over a month. Needs EQ and probably an outro change. However it feels like I'm missing an ingredient in the song. What's wrong here?

Upřímně řečeno: jako snímek jedné textury je ten descript silný a konkrétní, ale je to fotka, ne film. Tady je, co profesionální skladby tohoto typu mají navíc, seřazeno podle dopadu:

  1. Vývoj v čase. Popisuješ jeden statický stav bez dramaturgie. Profi progressive post-punk stojí na kontrastu sekcí — řídký nástup, akumulace vrstev, stažení, vrchol. Bez toho vznikne uniformní plocha od první do poslední vteřiny.

  2. Nespárované "no cymbals". Chybí, co místo činelů nese vysoké rytmické subdivize (u profi 909 darkwave hi-haty, tikání, perkusivní šum). Samotná negace navíc riskuje, že model činely naopak přidá.

  3. Prostor a hloubka pole.

youngcipher-83
  1. Instrumentální melodie. Melodii nese jen hlas; žánr typicky má druhý melodický hlas (syntetická linka, kytarový motiv) jako instrumentální hook.

  2. Drobnější mezery: percepční tempo (jediné slovo o energii je "driving"), harmonická identita (statický dron vs. pohyb akordů), stereo obraz (co mono ve středu, co široké) a charakter konce skladby.

Kdyby ses někdy rozhodl doplnit jediné, největší rozdíl udělá bod 1 — a bod 2 je jediné místo, kde descript aktivně riskuje opačný výsledek, než chceš.

Google translate says:

Frankly: as a snapshot of a single texture, the description is strong and specific, but it's a photo, not a movie. Here's what professional compositions of this type have in addition, sorted by impact:

Development in time. You describe a single static state without dramaturgy. Professional progressive post-punk relies on the contrast of sections — sparse onset, accumulation of layers, withdrawal, climax. Without this, a uniform surface is created from the first to the last second.,

Unpaired "no cymbals". What is missing instead of cymbals is what carries high rhythmic subdivisions (in the professional 909 darkwave hi-hats, ticking, percussive noise). Moreover, the very negation risks that the cymbal model adds on the contrary.,

Space and depth of field. The genre defines the contrast of dry drums against cavernous reverberation and echoes on the voice. You have dryness and coldness, but nowhere is there what sounds close, what is far and what space surrounds the singing.,

Vocal staging. "Strained high male lead" determines the register and tension, but not the phrasing (drawn vs. chopped lines), delay/reverb on the voice, nor the doubles, octaves or choruses — standard in this genre.,

Midrange. Between the crystalline guitar on top and the bass with sub-drone below, only the "dark pads" hold the middle — and that's a label, not a sound, according to your own test. Without specifying the texture, Suno reaches for a generic pad.,

Pulse shape. "Irregular asymmetric" doesn't say how lame the five-beat is — a long-short vs. short-long group is a completely different groove and in professional compositions it is often the grouping hook.,

Contrast of purity. Everything is clinical, bone-dry, crystalline, cold. Professional mixes have at least one warm or dirty element that the cold leans on — without contrast, cold doesn't sound like cold, but like a demo

keenranger-49 OP

Instrumental melody. The melody is carried by the voice alone; the genre typically has a second melodic voice (a synth line, a guitar motif) as an instrumental hook.,

Smaller gaps: perceptual tempo (the only word for energy is "driving"), harmonic identity (static drone vs. chord movement), stereo image (what's mono in the middle, what's wide), and the character of the ending.,

If you were ever to decide to add anything, point 1 would make the biggest difference — and point 2 is the only place where the description actively risks the opposite of what you want.

What I'm reading is I need to:
- Clean up or further refine the prompt. There's things that need to be better defined or use less vague terms. Including clarifying the desired pad texture.
- Define how I want the time signature to work.
- Include some warmth for contrast as everything is currently too focused on being cold.
- Use the front of the stereo space or better distribute elements as currently things are pushed back
- Have the music evolve more with additional movement in the layers with instruments or elements coming and going instead of being constant.
- Smaller gaps within the structure, movements and/or elements.
- Add a melodic instrument element as currently the melody is voice only.
- Specific drum machine with no cymbals is how I get around a suno reverb and cymbal wash issue. Cymbal wash has a tendency create multiple versions of itself playing at the same time as a song goes on which muddies the mix.
Could be confirmation bias, but including no cymbals, not just using a negative prompt, gives me better results. The idea is being specific causes suno to load the sample library for a specific drum machine instead of a more variable acoustic kit. While no cymbals isn't removing cymbals, but telling the ai to not program cymbals with the drum machine in the first place. How effective this is depends on the genre.

keenranger-49 OP

I just wanted to be sure I was reading it correctly. Stuff gets lost in translation, word order can get weird, all kinds of things. I also have a tendency to not very clear while also being very blunt.

In this case I don't think it's a genre specific issue. To me it's potentially a bit top heavy. Which would tie into your earlier comments about contrast and sound placement.

youngcipher-83

Let me start by asking if you have any mastering services? If not, and it would solve your problem, I have a site where mastering is free.

keenranger-49 OP

I've been slowly learning the DAW Reaper. You think it's just a mixing and mastering issue then?

youngcipher-83

No, I'm not saying that. I honestly can't tell what it could be missing. Because as I wrote above, This is not my style of music, where I move. But I can definitely offer you musical terms related to this style. But a mastering service is always necessary if you want your music to be of a really high standard.

youngcipher-83

You wrote about an equalizer. I found a few adjustments here for the stereo image.

youngcipher-83

Stereo image and mix Mono-centered rhythm section — kick, snare, bass and lead vocal strictly in the center. Hard-panned double-tracked guitars — two guitar tracks fully L/R, wide enveloping frame. Wide pad spread with mono low end — pads wide, bottom below 150 Hz summed to mono. Mid/side EQ boost on sides above 5 kHz — expansion of space without loss of core. Front-back depth via reverb amount — The depth of the mix is created by the difference in the amount of reverberation, not the volume. Sparse arrangement doctrine — 4–7 maximum of simultaneously sounding elements; uncluttered spacious mix. Frequency slotting between bass and guitar — bass holds 60–250 Hz, guitar clipped below 200 Hz.

youngcipher-83

```
[Analog console noise floor]
[Slightly dark master EQ curve] [veiled subdued top]
[Low-frequency mono compatibility check]
[No brickwall limiting on transients — snare and kick keep full peak] [explosive uncompressed attack]```
```
Sound design and instruments

[Analog subtractive synth pads — sawtooth and pulse waves, low-pass filter with resonance, slow attack 200–800 ms, cold sustained wash]
[Detuned dual-oscillator lead, detune 8–20 cents, thick beating dissonance]
[String machine texture (Solina, ARP) — grainy chorused ensemble shee]
[Analog choir / vox humana patch — ghostly synthetic voices]
[Church organ and harmonium samples — sacred sustained drone]
[Monophonic bass synth with short decay and resonant filter, rubbery cold pluck]
[Filter cutoff automation as main movement]
[LFO-modulated pad drift]
[Drum machine sample sourcing — Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-55/DR-110, Roland TR-606/TR-808, Oberheim DMX, LinnDrum, Yamaha RX5, sampled into Akai S900; thin punchy machine crack]
[Guitar amp: small combo, low gain, high treble — thin razor jangle, not a metal high-gain]
[E-bow and volume swell guitar — without transient, bowed sustained drone]
[Sub-drone layer, sine, subsonic pressure floor]
[Field recordings, atmospheric texture bed]

youngcipher-83

I don't know if I'm helping you in any way with this.

keenranger-49 OP

My prompting does leave a bit to be desired. I tend to rely too much on more vague terms and the randomness of generation.

youngcipher-83

i understand.

youngcipher-83

youngcipher-83

I found precise prompt

youngcipher-83

Gothic post-punk menace isolated: the early-80s darkwave lineage — cold chorused bass prowling high, cathedral-reverb guitar chime, drum-machine chill, sexual-spiritual dread — the leather-and-eyeliner attitude that turns a love song into an exorcism. A unique and specific vocalist, deep sepulchral baritone-croon timbre, velvet and grave, seductive as a threat, sustained low notes swelling with vibrato, a colder falsetto haunting the edges. Synths glacial and widescreen: a hymn-like organ pad, icy analogue strings, one brittle arpeggio needling underneath. Bass melodic and gothic, drum machine sparse and funereal, a slow processional pulse, rimshot cracks echoing in stone. Guitar only as atmosphere — a single delayed chime, feedback held like incense. Tempo grave and hypnotic, tension coiled and never fully released. Vast dark reverb, analogue cold, romance rewritten as damnation.

Negative

cheerful major-key pop, bright synth-pop bounce, gospel choir, blues slide, upbeat tempo, sunny delivery, acoustic warmth, busy fills, ironic lightness, Harmonic stagnation, Dynamic flattening, Quantized sterility, Structural monotony, Predictability
