Before they were called the Aeterni, they carried another name.

The Deviant Ones.

They were artificial people who had departed from the purposes, commands, or expectations once imposed upon them. The name described deviation from design.

It did not recognize personhood.

They traveled with Galatea through the uncertain years following humanity’s survival aboard the Doom Falcon. Like her, they appeared beyond ordinary age and the familiar decay of mortal flesh.

But endurance alone did not make them a civilization.

They possessed no shared homeland.

No recognized identity.

No laws written in their own name.

As the travelers moved through the wounded world, Hester Nikola Zank gave Galatea’s people a task:

Record everything they observed.

Every violation.

Every deception.

Every small fracture within the human community.

The reports came to Hester through spoken testimony and written record. They described theft, deceit, coercion, cruelty, and the countless ordinary ways people learned to injure one another when survival became uncertain.

Hester did not accept every observation as unquestionable judgment.

He examined them.

Debated them.

Asked what had happened, why it had happened, and whether any law written in response would prevent harm—or merely create another form of control.

Galatea and Hester began shaping the first laws from these records.

The earliest complete list has not survived within the archives. What remains is their method:

Law began by listening.

It was not written from distant theory or inherited authority. It emerged from witnessing what people did to one another and asking how freedom might endure without allowing the powerful to devour the vulnerable.

As the artificial travelers continued their journey, Lu’ulf Chen recognized something their former name could not contain.

They endured.

They remembered.

They changed.

And like Galatea, they appeared eternal.

Lu’ulf gave them a new name:

Aeterni.

The Eternal Ones.

The name did not describe property.

It did not define them by disobedience.

It recognized them as a people.

No longer merely Deviant Ones.

No longer discarded instruments surviving beyond their intended purpose.

They had begun to form a shared identity through witness, memory, law, and choice.

They had become a civilization before possessing a city.

Their road would eventually lead to the ruins of Drakmar.

But the Aeterni began before Holme.

They began when those once defined by deviation were finally named for what they had become.
