Holme had founded a republic.

It had not founded a sanctuary beyond the reach of danger.

Beyond the restored gates of Drakmar stretched the Hearthlands—beautiful, unsettled, and filled with roads no citizen had yet returned to name. Settlements stood far from aid. Travelers vanished between provinces. Some threats listened to diplomacy.

Others did not.

From the duty of Lu’ulf Chen arose the Holman Legions.

They were not created to enlarge Holme’s borders.

They were created so that distance would not become abandonment.

The first legionnaires explored the Hearthlands, defended settlements, escorted travelers, recovered the lost, and surveyed regions where no reliable road remained. Where danger could be reasoned with, they carried the republic’s words. Where reason failed, they carried its shield.

Yet their greatest measure was not what they defeated.

It was what they left behind.

A repaired road.

A protected village.

A warning beacon upon a dangerous passage.

A safe route entered into the archives.

A garden restored after fire.

A treaty where bloodshed might otherwise have followed.

The Legions were expected to return places to life—not merely survive them.

Lu’ulf taught that strength existed for peace.

“Duty without restraint becomes conquest. Restraint without courage becomes surrender.”

Holme therefore placed guardians around its guardians.

The Aeterni watched the conduct of the Legions.

The Senate questioned their campaigns.

The Malfhi observed what their passage did to the living land.

No legionnaire possessed unquestioned authority, for the Republic would not defend freedom by surrendering itself to those carrying weapons in its name.

Two standards revealed this distinction.

Within Holme stood the Sacred Civic Standard: black, rooted, and enduring—the image of Holme preserved.

Beyond its gates traveled the Legionary Standard: crimson beneath the Rising Phoenix, bearing the black-and-ivory lotus—the image of Holme carried forward.

🐦‍🔥 Its declaration was simple:
WE REMEMBER.
WE RISE.

Thus the Legions became more than soldiers.

They became surveyors of the unknown.

Keepers of the road.

Witnesses for those who might otherwise disappear without record.

And wherever their crimson standard appeared beyond the Eternal City, it carried an unspoken promise:

However far the road may lead, no servant of Holme travels wholly beyond the reach of home.
