Holme was not permitted to become uninterrupted stone.
Between its monuments, residences, markets, clinics, Athenaea, Baths, and waterways grew the Topiaria—the cultivated green spaces that formed the living tissue of the city.
They took many forms.
Green corridors carried shade between neighborhoods.
Courtyards gathered flowers around fountains.
Rooftop gardens softened the upper terraces.
Orchards grew beside residences and public paths.
Vines crossed the canals upon living bridges.
There were quiet groves, medicinal gardens, children’s gardens, memorial gardens, flower terraces, and sanctuaries where pollinators could flourish among the architecture of the Republic.
Each served more than beauty.
The Topiaria cooled the streets, refreshed the air, provided medicinal plants, sheltered citizens from noise and heat, and placed tranquility within reach of daily life. Elevated garden paths connected terraces, while shaded avenues allowed movement through Holme without surrendering every journey to stone and sunlight.
Their placement was deliberate.
Gardens stood near Valetudinaria and Diaeta halls, where clean air, medicine, rest, and daily health belonged to the same civic system. They bordered Nymphaea, Markets, Athenaea, residences, canals, and public courtyards, ensuring that the living world remained present wherever Holman life gathered.
This principle carried the memory of Aleanah Dawnblade.
Aleanah taught that civilization should cultivate the world surrounding it rather than dominate it. Orchards, medicine, public gardens, cultivated waterways, sleep sanctuaries, and civic groves became expressions of that covenant.
The Malfhi became keepers of the living city.
Yet the Topiaria belonged to Holme as a whole. Humans, Aeterni, Malfhi, dwarves, and gnomes inhabited a Republic in which constructed beauty and living beauty were not enemies.
Stone gave the city endurance.
Water gave it motion.
The Topiaria gave it breath.
Holme did not place nature beyond its walls and call the separation civilization.
It allowed Natura to pass through the gates, cross the bridges, climb the terraces, and grow beside the lives of its people.
The city flourished because it was built.
It endured because it remained alive.
