Sometimes listening to motivational stuff/content feels like it adds pain, because it just makes you remember what you're struggling with and how you've failed

Depends on the kind of motivation. The one with the motivational/tuff videos you said - yeah, that's not useful.
But motivation sometimes is the only thing keeping you going. "Discipline > motivation" is starting to be popular, though discipline is only achieved with willpower and consistency, and motivation is the thing that helps you start building discipline.
There was one time I studied about 9 months for two important exams, which I crushed at the end. Anyway, I had never opened a book in my life before I started studying, talk about studying for school. My studying pattern over those months was very uneven and there were lots of moments of setbacks and burnouts. The motivation of the "reward" after the exams, in my case entering a good high school, is what kept me going.
So the thing that makes me work are goals and deadlines, rather than discipline.
I can say I'm far from a disciplined person, but that's just my experience.
