People who often feel less about themselves and hate themselves tend to do this- they constantly require validation!!
There are different dynamics to it- making your partner say the same things and do the same things again and again makes him/her familiar with that pattern so they choose a familiar pain rather than an unfamiliar pain(reason why toxic relationships continue). Thus it is sometimes done with insecurity and sometimes as manipulation....
