Fixing VPS Lag: Is Your Hostinger KVM Upgrade Worth It?

ملخص

This Hostinger community discussion provides a troubleshooting guide for users experiencing lag after upgrading their VPS plans. It covers essential diagnostic steps, including monitoring resource usage via hPanel, using htop to identify CPU bottlenecks, and verifying game-specific memory settings. The guide explains why simply upgrading to a KVM 4 plan may not resolve performance issues if the underlying cause is related to single-thread speed, network latency, or misconfigured software setting...

KVM 4 worth?

I upgraded from kvm 2 to kvm 4 and my game still lags

Got it! Have you run any kind of diagnostic to figure out why your game is lagging?

How do I go about this? Does this mean my VPS upgrade was all for nothing?

Not necessarily: a bigger Hostinger VPS only fixes lag if CPU or RAM was the bottleneck, so the first step is to check what your server is actually using while the game lags.

  1. In hPanel, open your VPS → Backups & Monitoring → Server Usage and look at CPU, RAM and traffic around the time it lags
  2. Connect over SSH and run htop while it lags. If one core sits at 100%, the game is limited by single-thread speed and extra cores won't help
  3. Check your game's own memory setting. Some setups keep a low default after an upgrade (the Minecraft Game Panel defaults to 1028 MB), so the extra RAM can sit unused
  4. From your PC, run ping <your VPS IP> (and tracert <your VPS IP> on Windows) to check latency and packet loss. Distance to the data center matters a lot for games. No need to share the IP here

Good to know: a CPU limited warning in hPanel means the VPS is being throttled, and Hostinger says upgrading won't lift that. Also, the data center location is fixed on an existing VPS.

Which game is it, how many players, and what do CPU and RAM show during the lag? With that we can narrow it down.

The default Minecraft memory is 1024 MB (not 1028), and the CPU limit can be removed once per week from the VPS dashboard. It kicks in when CPU stays at 100% for more than 180 minutes.

@SKYxWASMM your upgrade isn’t wasted. KVM 4 gives you a lot more room, but lag can come from CPU, RAM settings, or your connection, so it’s worth checking which one it is. Can you share:

Which game you’re hosting and how many players join
What the CPU and RAM graphs in hPanel show while it lags
Whether there’s a CPU limit banner on your VPS dashboard

If that banner is there, it’s probably the cause, and removing the limit should help right away.
