Summary

At Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments, we provide expert advice on navigating the competitive VGC meta. This guide explains how to analyze opponent cores by working backward from their win conditions and identifying key threats during team preview. By focusing on flexible leads and strategic positioning, players can improve their decision-making process and gain a significant advantage in tournament play.

Ok so I know this isn't technically a teambuilding question but I don't know where else to ask this so I'm asking it here.

Work backwards from what threatens their win condition. If your Rillaboom makes their rain attacker uncomfortable, expect them to bring something that pressures Rillaboom too, rather than just picking the four most familiar faces.

At preview, identify their main attacker, what enables it, and which Pokémon checks your own best attacker. Then consider two likely leads and choose an opening that has a playable response to both. Keep the relevant check in the back instead of committing everything to one prediction. In open team sheets, use the actual moves and items to narrow that down. The aim is a flexible first turn, not guessing all four perfectly.
