Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments community is diving deep into Japan Sand team building. This discussion analyzes the viability of a support core featuring Mega Salamence, Tyranitar, and Excadrill, while addressing challenges with current sets like Sinistcha and Rotom-Heat. Members are sharing strategic adjustments, such as swapping moves on Milotic, to help players refine their competitive archetypes and improve performance in the current VGC meta.
Wanted to use Japan Sand since Mega Mence is back. Haven’t played fast sand since M-A and not familiar with the archetype.
The sets are as follows:
Salamence @ Salamencite
Hasty Nature
Intimidate
10 ATK / 24 SPATK / 32 SPE
- Tailwind
- Double-Edge
- Hyper Voice
- Protect
Standard 2018 set for the archetype, rarely use TW, too threatened by Ice types despite Ttar and Exca.
Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Jolly Nature
Sand Stream
32 ATK / 2 DEF / 32 SPE
- Rock Slide
- Superpower
- Ice Punch
- Knock Off
Standard Scarf Ttar, inflexibility is rough on me.
Excadrill @ Focus Sash
Adamant Nature
Sand Rush
2 HP / 32 ATK / 32 SPE
- Protect
- High Horsepower
- Rock Slide
- Iron Head
Standard Sand Rush set, JS set had LO, gave it to Rotom, hard to use outside of sand.
Milotic @ Leftovers
Bold Nature
Competitive
32 HP / 32 DEF / 2 SPATK
- Protect
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Life Dew
Standard set, genuinely solid on my team.
Sinistcha @ Sitrus Berry
Calm Nature
Hospitality
32 HP / 14 DEF / 20 SPDEF
- Matcha Gotcha
- Strength Sap
- Trick Room
- Rage Powder
Standard set, hardly bring it, hardly does anything.
Rotom-Heat @ Life Orb
Calm Nature
Levitate
32 HP / 6 DEF / 5 SPDEF / 23 SPE
- Overheat
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Protect
Weird set, need a counter to Pelipper, Corviknight and Mega Golisopod. Good against those, horrible against everything else.

I’d try Helping Hand over Life Dew on Milotic before changing any Pokémon. Your Excadrill does around 70–84% to an offensive Mega Baxcalibur with Iron Head, so being faster doesn’t mean you can remove it before it attacks. Helping Hand gets the KO against that spread while letting you keep Focus Sash.
It helps Rotom too. Rotom has the right coverage for the Pokémon you mentioned, but rain makes dealing with Mega Golisopod harder. A specially bulky one can survive Overheat, whereas Helping Hand can push it into KO range. You lose Milotic’s healing, but Sinistcha still gives you some recovery.
I wouldn’t drop Tailwind. Excadrill reaches 280 Speed in sand, which is still slower than an Adamant Sneasler after Unburden. It also needs something to fall back on when Pelipper changes the weather. Salamence beside Sinistcha could give you more chances to set it, since Rage Powder can draw away single-target Ice attacks.
Scarf Ttar is a bit awkward here. It reaches 186 Speed, just below max-Speed Mega Mence at 189, so Ice Punch won’t always save that matchup. After Intimidate, it won’t knock out a healthy Mence either. If the move lock keeps costing you games, a bulkier set with Protect is worth trying, but I’d change Milotic first.
I’d also keep Rotom for now. Its typing covers some fairly big holes in the team. The Life Orb damage is rough alongside sand, but changing it to a berry without putting points into Special Attack would noticeably weaken it.
For M-C specifically, watch out for Garchomp Z being immune to High Horsepower through Levitate, and Lucario Z reducing its damage because it makes contact. Baxcalibur can’t be burned either, so Scald and Matcha Gotcha won’t weaken its Attack.
Rillaboom over Sinistcha is still an option, but I was too quick to suggest it. You’d gain Fake Out and more pressure against Water types, but lose redirection and your only way to reverse Trick Room.
I’d start with Helping Hand, keep Sash on Exca, and practise saving Ttar to reset sand later. You don’t need to lead the sand pair every game.
I’ll retry the team in a few minutes. I found this one link on Twitter going over popular teams showing out already and the Salamence sand team had Indeedee-M and Psychic Seed Unburden Sneasler and Icy Wind in place of Life Dew on Milotic. It’s been working out great so far, but I do like the idea of making a team work through my own teambuilding and optimizing it further.
Update on the sets:
Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Adamant Nature
Sand Stream
32 HP / 32 ATK / 2 SPDEF
- Rock Slide
- Knock Off
- Protect
- Dragon Dance
Rotom-Heat @ Choice Scarf
Timid Nature
Levitate
2 HP / 32 SPATK / 32 SPE
- Overheat
- Electroweb
- Volt Switch
- Trick/Will-O-Wisp
I realize I still only hit 226 which is slower than Scarf Final Gambit Staraptor
What would be your recommendation? Low Kick?
Unironically Ttar’s best move against M-Pod and gives me a third way to deal with Kingambit beyond Rotom Overheat and Exca HH
Oh yeah I already ran the calcs even max HP Ttar isn’t safe
Especially if Golisopod has Swords Dance up
The only way it got away with that was either lose to Final Gambit Staraptor taking out Mega Salamence or Flip Turn with Life Orb into Rotom-Heat and get my Electroweb up so I can outspeed and KO it
