CHAPTER 1.
| THE DECISION. |
Silence.
It was the first thing Sonic noticed.
Not the comforting silence after one of Eggman’s defeats. Not the quiet of a peaceful afternoon in Green Hill.
This silence was empty.
Wrong.
It swallowed every sound he made.
His shoes barely scraped against the grass. The wind carried no birdsong. Rivers flowed without a whisper. Even the leaves hanging from ancient trees refused to rustle.
“…Tails?”
No answer.
“Amy!”
Nothing.
His pace quickened.
“Knuckles?!”
Still nothing.
An uneasy knot twisted itself tighter in his chest. Hours had passed since he’d begun searching, yet there wasn’t a single sign of life. not one of his friends, not a single Badnik, not even Eggman. It was as though the world had simply… forgotten everyone except him.
“This isn’t funny…”
His voice sounded painfully small.
Then—
BOOOOOOM!
The horizon erupted in crimson light.
A pillar of scarlet energy pierced the sky, followed by a shockwave powerful enough to shake the ground beneath Sonic’s feet.
Another explosion followed.
Then another.
Without hesitation, Sonic sprinted toward the source.
If someone’s there…
He pushed himself faster.
The closer he got, the more devastated the landscape became. Great cracks split the earth apart. Entire cliffs had been carved away by blasts of Chaos Energy.
Finally…
He arrived.
“…Shadow?”
The Ebony Hedgehog stood alone amidst the destruction.
His chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. Blood trickled from a cut above one eye, staining the white fur of his chest. One hover shoe sparked violently against the shattered stone beneath him.
He looked exhausted.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing across from him…
…was Sonic.
Sonic’s breath caught in his throat.
“…What?”
It wasn’t someone who merely resembled him.
It was him.
The same cobalt-blue fur.
The same emerald eyes.
The same confident posture.
Every quill.
Every detail.
Every movement.
Like a perfect reflection that had stepped out of a mirror.
Only…
Its smile wasn’t his.
It stretched just a little too wide.
Its eyes held no warmth.
Only amusement.
The other Sonic chuckled.
“So…”
His own voice echoed across the battlefield.
“You’ve finally worn him down.”
Shadow silently raised his fists.
“I don’t need commentary.”
The imposter laughed.
” You always were stubborn.”
In an instant
The two disappeared.
Blue and black streaks collided across the canyon faster than lightning. Chaos Spears tore through the air while spinning kicks left trails of blue energy behind them. Sonic could barely follow. The imposter laughed through every strike.
Shadow remained silent. A brutal uppercut sent Shadow hurtling into a cliffside. Stone exploded around him.
Before he could recover—
The fake Sonic appeared behind him. A kick drove Shadow back into the canyon floor. Dust engulfed everything.
When it settled…Shadow struggled onto one knee. His breathing had become ragged. The imposter stood untouched. Smiling.
“You’ve lost.”
Shadow wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.
“…Not yet.”
The smile widened.
“You don’t know when to quit.”
Its eyes finally noticed the blue hedgehog. Their smile widened.
“…What?”
A voice echoed from everywhere at once. Cold. Ancient. Unfeeling.
“Sonic Maurice the Hedgehog.”
The blue hedgehog’s ears flattened.
“… What the hell are you?”
A long black blade slowly descended before him, its edge gleaming with an unnatural crimson glow. The voice continued.
“Your decision will determine the fate of this world.”
Sonic stared at the weapon.
“I don’t understand-.”
The blade floated into his waiting hands.
”Kill the man that stands in your way.”
His fingers trembled around the hilt.
“No…”
The darkness shifted. He saw Tails. Amy. Knuckles. Cream. Rouge. Everyone he’d ever fought beside. Alive. Safe.
Waiting.
“ Kill Shadow. “
The visions remained.
” And you will return to them.”
The images vanished.
Only Shadow remained. Broken. Bleeding, barely standing. The fake Sonic folded his arms, watching in silence. The voice spoke one final time.
“Refuse…”
The imposter slowly began gathering an enormous sphere of blue energy between his hands.
”…and you shall perish beside him.”
Sonic staggered backward.
“No…”
His breathing became uneven.
“I won’t…”
He looked at Shadow.
“I can’t kill you!”
For the first time since the battle began…Shadow looked directly at him. His crimson eyes held no anger. No resentment.Only acceptance.
“…Do it.”
Sonic froze.
“…What?”
“You heard them.”
Shadow slowly forced himself to stand, despite every muscle in his body protesting.
“If my death saves everyone…”
He looked toward the distant horizon.
“…then it’s a small price.”
“No!”
Sonic shook his head violently.
“There has to be another way!”
“There isn’t.”
“We’ll figure something out!”
Shadow gave a faint, tired smile. One so small Sonic almost didn’t notice it.
“…That’s what you always say.”
Silence hung between them. Then Shadow stepped closer.
“If you die here…”
“…Then who will protect the world?”
Sonic’s grip tightened around the blade. His hands shook so violently he nearly dropped it.
“I can’t…”
“You can.”
“I don’t want to!”
“I know.”
Shadow closed his eyes.
“For once…”
“…listen to me.”
His voice became barely more than a whisper.
“You still have a future.”
“You still have people waiting for you.”
“You still have a world worth protecting.”
A slow breath escaped him.
“I’ve already failed mine.”
Sonic felt tears beginning to sting his eyes.
“…Shadow…”
“Save them.”
“…Save everyone.”
“Save the world I couldn’t.”
The fake Sonic watched. The unseen voice remained silent. Waiting.
Sonic looked down at the blade. Then back at Shadow. Every instinct screamed at him to throw it away. To fight. To refuse. To run and take Shadow with him.
But there was nowhere left to run…no hidden answer. No miracle waiting to appear. Only one impossible decision.
His trembling fingers tightened around the hilt.
“…I’m sorry.”
The words barely escaped his lips.
Shadow gave a single nod.
> ’ I know. ‘*
Sonic closed his eyes. Then..He finally stepped forward. Dagger in hand.
Shadow was tired. Yes, but he wouldn’t want Sonic to kill him as quickly.
He soon summoned a Chaos Spear.
Sonic noticed. Of course he noticed.
His ears pinned down before having to dash forward, his hand gripping even more onto the Dagger as it came down onto the Ebony hedgehog before they could even fight back.
||Green blood soon started to drip down from the floor, staining the grass while the hedgehog's eyes were widened. Both of them were.||
|| he plunged it out of his chest. Soon stabbing down. Again. And again. And again. Green blood starting to stain his face, his hands were trembling while his head tilted down, tears stinging at the end of his eyes while his shoulders had trembled.
He couldn’t bear to watch the life leave Shadow’s eyes while the spear had finally clattered onto the floor. The green blood still ran.||
