Drakmar had fallen before humanity reached its gates.

The surviving histories remember it as a republic, but they do not preserve one certain account of how that republic ended. Its government disappeared. Its plazas emptied. Its monuments outlived the voices that had once spoken beneath them.

Yet Drakmar did not become barren.

Its fallen arches, civic stairways and monumental halls remained scattered across the valley. White-stone towers rose above broken terraces. Aqueducts crossed the hills. Fractured domes retained their golden frameworks, shining above streets no republic governed.

The city’s laws had fallen silent.

Its waters had not.

Ancient channels continued carrying clear water through the ruins. Trees grew within abandoned courtyards. Flowering vines descended from broken galleries. Roots crossed marble roads, entered fractured foundations and held shattered walls together.

Bees gathered where senators had once spoken.

Spring had entered the corpse of the republic.

To the survivors of the Doom Falcon, Drakmar appeared to be an abandoned city waiting to be occupied. It possessed walls, water, shelter and civic spaces that resembled architecture remembered from Earth.

But Drakmar was not empty.

The Malfhi moved through hidden passages and hive-like chambers beneath the ruins. They cultivated gardens, restored damaged soil, fed the hungry and healed those who entered their care. They did not claim ownership over the city, because they did not understand life as something that could be possessed merely by enclosing it.

The survivors also encountered the Aeterni, whose presence revealed that humanity had not discovered an uninhabited world. Other peoples already carried memories, customs and claims that did not depend upon human recognition.

Drakmar therefore became humanity’s first great lesson in the Hearthlands.

A place may lack a government without lacking life.

A ruin may shelter newcomers without belonging exclusively to them.

A city may fall while the world beneath it continues growing.

Humanity found refuge among Drakmar’s remains, but refuge alone could not create Holme. The newcomers still had to learn the difference between occupying a ruin and belonging to a living place.

Holme would not erase Drakmar.

It would grow from everything Drakmar had failed to destroy.
