Holme did not divide life into distant islands.
The home was not separated from the city. It was woven into it.
Residences rose above arcades, stood beside canals, gathered around garden courts, and occupied quiet upper terraces behind public colonnades. A single structure might contain workshops and shops below, communal rooms within, and private dwellings above.
From these homes, the necessities of a flourishing life remained near.
A short walk could reach a Market, Forum, Athenaeum, Nymphaeum, public Bath, clinic, Diaeta hall, Hospitium, Stadium, Topiarium, or branch of the Sacred Way. Pedestrian avenues and covered colonnades connected the neighborhoods, while canals, boats, bridges, ramps, lifts, elevated garden paths, service tunnels, and cryptoporticus corridors carried movement through the city.
Heavy goods followed other routes.
Residential streets remained places for living.
Gardens softened the boundaries between home and civic life. Courtyards held flowers and water. Rooftops became gardens. Orchards appeared between terraces. Shaded paths and fountains allowed the city to remain dense without becoming merciless.
Yet nearness did not require constant exposure.
Holman mater could seal openings, soften exterior noise, insulate private chambers, adjust light and temperature, and form temporary partitions within the dwelling. Sleep could be protected. Conversation could remain private. A citizen could withdraw without being driven beyond the reach of community.
The city gave people access to life without denying them silence.
Humans, Aeterni, Malfhi, dwarves, and gnomes did not merely occupy neighboring districts. Together they built, cultivated, repaired, and inhabited the Republic.
Holme was a shared act.
Its homes expressed that truth at the smallest scale: private lives held within a civilization designed for belonging.
The Republic surrounded the household without consuming it.
Beyond the door waited gardens, knowledge, nourishment, health, water, and public life.
Behind it remained quiet.
Thus Holme preserved both halves of belonging:
A place among others.
And a place where one could be alone.
