Womens history month + international women's day
Hello, everyone! As it is officially the 8th of March, otherwise known as International Women's Day, there is no better time to announce that this marks a very important time known as Women's History Month. This month is all about acknowledging, highlighting and celebrating the many achievements and contributions from women around the globe. Women from so many different backgrounds & cultures have had such an impact on our world today, from making groundbreaking scientific discoveries to paving the way for multiple political movements.
Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8th to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the United States as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year. In February 1980, United States President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th, 1980, as National Women’s History Week. It was later officially established in the following years as Women's History Month.
Throughout the month, many communities, all being spearheaded by women, celebrate this occasion and highlight the impact of women throughout history and to our modern world. It is important to recognize the challenges that women have faced and continue to face in modern-day society in order to bring about real change and progression.
