Okay let's try an example
Let's say you really need your whimsicott alive to lay tailwind again in two turns to seal your win
Hmm
And your enemies mega lopunny just used bounce, a flying type move to kill it
Bounce is two turn. Protect garuntees you won't be hit by it and your Mon stays alive

Should I always play whimsicott first?
It depends on your opponent
Another good example, my mega Gengar uses perish song to kill pokemon in three turns and shadow tag to stop them from switching out and breaking my perish trap
Protect lets me count one of those turns down
Or let's say you went mega and you think your opponent is going to double into it with attacks. Protect allows you to garuntee you took no damage that turn and either set up with your second pokemon or deal damage

My favorite part is the chess match in higher ranks where that same scenario happens but you have to guess on if he's going to try and bait you into attacking his opposite slot or not

mega charizards for example tend not to run protect

Incin is there for pressure, (fake out and parting shot) to stop voice users like primarina and to deny perish which is hard to do otherwise

sinistcha rn is very good bc he redirects, can heal your pokemon, and overall good type, so if you can get one, do it
