Social understanding, infrastructure, or control become depotism when it shifts from serving the collective good to concentrating unchecked power in a way that suppresses freedom, accountability, and the ability of individuals to question or influence authority.

besides the fact that collective good can also be a form of depotism I think the factual basis of questioning or influencing authority has some merit as a metric of discernment.

the easy part of depotism to forget is dark depotism where virtue and benevolence wins over cruelty and malaise.
