We will study John 8
The Condition: "Continue" (John 8:31) Jesus begins with a conditional statement for true discipleship. The Greek word for "continue" is menō (Strong’s G3306), which the BLB Outline defines as "to remain as one, not to become another or different". What does it mean to abide in His word? Jesus clarifies in John 15:7, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." The Old Testament reveals this requires active internalization: "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Psalm 119:11). It is a persistent endurance, not a passing glance: "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein... this man shall be blessed in his deed" (James 1:25).The Promise: "Truth" and "Free" (John 8:32)The Greek word for "truth" is alētheia (Strong’s G225), representing moral and religious truth that stands in direct opposition to a lie. To "make you free" is eleutheróō (Strong's G1659), meaning to liberate. The Cross-Reference Chain: What is this truth? Jesus prayed in John 17:17, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." The Old Testament establishes this eternal foundation in Psalm 119:142: "Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth." But scripture takes this further, personifying the Word itself: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). Knowing the truth is ultimately knowing Christ Himself, who states in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."The Spiritual Reality: "Servant of Sin" (John 8:33-34)The Pharisees claimed physical lineage to Abraham as proof of freedom, but Jesus exposes their spiritual slavery. "Servant" is translated from doûlos (Strong’s G1401), meaning a literal slave or bondman. The Cross-Reference Chain: How does one become a slave to sin? Romans 6:16 explains: "to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey." The Old Testament reveals the anatomy of this entrapment: "His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins" (Proverbs 5:22). This bondage progressively tightens until it destroys: "Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death" (James 1:15).The Deliverer: "The Son... Free Indeed" (John 8:35-36)A slave (doûlos) has no permanent rights or inheritance in the family household, but the Son resides there forever. The Cross-Reference Chain: When the Son sets a servant of sin free, they are not merely released to wander; they are adopted. Romans 8:15 confirms this transfer: "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." Therefore, believers are commanded to fiercely guard this new status: "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage" (Galatians 5:1).
