Humanity entered the Hearthlands without a kingdom.
The survivors of the Doom Falcon emerged from beneath the sea carrying what little remained of their former civilization. They possessed weapons, knowledge, fragments of law and memories of a world that could no longer shelter them.
They possessed no land.
No city awaited their arrival.
No throne recognized their authority.
To the survivors, they were refugees—people who had escaped the death of Earth and the drowning of their ark.
To some of the Hearthlands’ older peoples, they were something far more troubling.
Humanity had not been forgotten.
Ancient memories did not speak only of invention, courage or survival. They also remembered conquest. The newcomers therefore entered a world in which their desperation did not erase what others believed humanity represented.
They had fled an empire.
They still carried the habits of one.
The Moonar Collective attempted to preserve order among the survivors. Its lawmakers, consuls and defectors carried forward what remained of civic life, but law written for another world could not answer every question the Hearthlands placed before them.
Who possessed the land upon which they stood?
What authority survived the death of the civilization that had granted it?
Could people carrying weapons call themselves refugees if those already living there remembered them as conquerors?
The first humans entered the Hearthlands as a contradiction.
They were powerful, yet homeless.
They possessed history, yet had no future.
They carried the knowledge to build another civilization, but not yet the wisdom to understand what kind of civilization ought to be built.
Beyond the shore stood the remains of Drakmar, a fallen republic reclaimed by gardens, roots, waterways and bees. Its abandoned structures appeared to offer shelter, but the ruins were not empty of life—and the world beneath them was not dead.
Humanity’s arrival did not mark the founding of Holme.
It marked the beginning of the question that would eventually create it:
Could the survivors of one civilization build a home without claiming ownership over everything they found?
Holme began only when humanity learned that survival was not the same as belonging.
