Holme was not eternal because its walls never fell.

It was eternal because its people learned that home could survive beyond them.

There came an age when foreign powers occupied the avenues of the Eternal City.

The banners of Holme were removed.

The Senate was silenced.

Strangers entered the temples.

Gardens cultivated through generations were damaged beneath unfamiliar hands.

Citizens fled through gates their ancestors had built to welcome the peoples of the Hearthlands.

To an invader, the city appeared conquered.

To Holme, the greater test had begun.

The Republic had been founded upon six promises, and no promise depended entirely upon marble.

The Aeterni carried laws and records so freedom would not be rewritten by occupation.

The Malfhi carried seeds, remedies, and the living knowledge of Natura so the wounded earth could someday flower again.

The Legions carried duty beyond the fallen gates, defending those who could no longer shelter behind the city’s walls.

The senators carried the practice of questioning, refusing to let silence become obedience.

The dwarves and gnomes carried plans, tools, measurements, and the memory of how Holme had been constructed.

Families carried names.

They carried songs.

They carried rites, recipes, stories, and the remembered voices of those who could not escape.

Holme therefore lived in exile.

It existed wherever freedom remained protected.

Wherever memory remained spoken.

Wherever duty defended without ruling.

Wherever knowledge could still question authority.

Wherever life was cultivated instead of possessed.

Wherever sacrifice was remembered as the price of another person’s liberty.

Foreign powers could occupy the avenues.

They could close the Senate.

They could enter the temples and tear the standards from their ceremonial places.

But they could not carry away the covenant unless the people of Holme surrendered it willingly.

They did not.

The empty city became a wound upon the Hearthlands.

Beyond it, the displaced Republic became something its conquerors could neither surround nor govern:

A civilization no longer contained by its own walls.

A city could be seized.

But no conqueror could possess Holme.
