While we are not in any position to really answer that question, there are plausible scenarios. The gospel account is one of them, without the supernatural stuff (imo). As an atheist, I also think that it could be reasonable Jesus' body was laid in an unmarked mass grave, as that was a common burial practice for the Romans back then and unless his family was influential to request his body have his own tomb or to be taken by them, since Jewish law woulda wanted the bodies down before the Sabbath, that coulda very well happened.
