GC Sand Team Talk: Gyarados Replacement

Summary

In Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments this announcement reviews a GC Sand team paste and asks whether Gyarados should stay. The thread covers Gyarados role, Intimidate counter issues, alternative picks like Araquanid and movesets (liquidation, leech life, scary face, mirror coat, soak) to improve matchups and speed control.

Building for tomorrow, this is what i have right now. The team feels good together, aside from Gyarados due to all the Intimidate counterers running around, but I don't know what to swap for it that fits. Tyranitar is the only must-keep mon here, other considerations have been Primarina, Sinistcha, Talonflame, Excadrill, Sneasler, other Rotom forms, Archaludon, and Corviknight.

royalcloud-73

What is Gyarados purpose in the team?

royalcloud-73

As a disruption Mon are you only running it because it's typing?

swiftnectar-35 OP

Pretty much, Gyarados plugs all the right holes- another fighting resist, a ground immunity, specially defensive, water type damage, intimidater, but it really isn't coming to games that much.

swiftnectar-35 OP

Looking at a type chart, Araquanid may be worth using; i'm keeping the same amount of rock weaknesses, gaining an ice resist, losing a bit of electric weakness and only slightly losing on ground checks.

royalcloud-73

Plus it hits like a truck

swiftnectar-35 OP

That's true, water bubble is a hell of a drug

swiftnectar-35 OP

liquidation/leech life/scary face/protect?

royalcloud-73

Scary face is interesting.

swiftnectar-35 OP

Yeah, speed control, but I know wide guard is really useful too

swiftnectar-35 OP

four moveslots my beloathed

royalcloud-73

Yeah but it's only lowering it for a single Mon

royalcloud-73

Which is the issue I have with it. It would be good to like, slow down a basc or chomp

royalcloud-73

But all over speed control it lacks too much

swiftnectar-35 OP

also true, i was mostly thinking in terms of replacing thunder wave

swiftnectar-35 OP

so wide guard instead?

royalcloud-73

Mirror coat and soak are both interesting

royalcloud-73

Punish special attackers and remove stab from attacks

royalcloud-73

You won't have the single Mon speed control, but those two would give you options to punish mons for letting it stay

royalcloud-73

Would be really fun to remove yards heat wave stab in sun by making him water type or doubling his dmg back into him haha

royalcloud-73

Same for any special spread attacker really

swiftnectar-35 OP

yeah lol, the only issue is soak doesn't have priority so i'd be taking at least one blast- i can't do same turn soak-thunderbolt either

swiftnectar-35 OP

mirror coat might be worth a shot, should i ev for hp or spdef in that case

royalcloud-73

I mean you're trying to replace gyarados

royalcloud-73

Which you have built for bulk and disruption over damage

swiftnectar-35 OP

I mean to maximise mirror coat damage, i don't know how that calc works

royalcloud-73

It just doubles their special attack dmg they dealt back into them

royalcloud-73

Not yours

swiftnectar-35 OP

yeah ik that it uses their spatk, i'm asking should i invest in my hp or spdef?

royalcloud-73

I would invest in both

royalcloud-73

You're building for tr so you don't really need speed

royalcloud-73
  • spe +spdef nature
royalcloud-73

Go mostly bulk

royalcloud-73

Just like you did with gyarados

swiftnectar-35 OP

i'm not building for tr tho? not exactly planning on counteracting base 42 but still

swiftnectar-35 OP

or are you saying i should build for opposing trick roomers?

royalcloud-73

I mixed up thread titles mb

swiftnectar-35 OP

ah np lol

royalcloud-73

He gets icy wind btw

swiftnectar-35 OP

oh yeah

royalcloud-73

Sorry I've been thinking about him in tr this whole time lmao

swiftnectar-35 OP

honestly building for trick room is not a bad idea- i just played a bo3 against trick room and won 2-1, but minimising my speed further probably hits some vital tiers

swiftnectar-35 OP

that's fine haha, it is a very trickroomable mon

royalcloud-73

Well if he runs mirror coat he will be going last anyways

swiftnectar-35 OP

true

royalcloud-73

Gives him more opportunities to soak special damage

swiftnectar-35 OP

araquanid itself is def the shout anyways, not to base a whole judgement off one match but it feels amazing and does great se damage even with an intimidate, barely takes anything from side earthquake too

royalcloud-73

I would build him to survive heat wave and dazzling gleam

royalcloud-73

Run icy wind, mirror coat, protect leech life/liquidation

royalcloud-73

And that would be literally his entire purpose

royalcloud-73

Special damage sponge/speed control

royalcloud-73

Tho tbh dazzling gleam is the biggest spread threat

royalcloud-73

Blizzard isn't gonna ohko

royalcloud-73

His ability alr puts in natty fire counter

royalcloud-73

Eq doesn't ohko

swiftnectar-35 OP

good lord that i don't believe in, uninvested it lives a max spatk modest mega floette dazzling gleam in fairy aura

royalcloud-73

Yes I'm just talking of all the spreads

royalcloud-73

That one would hurt the most

royalcloud-73

So I would build him for max dmg single target special so that doesn't nuke him then spread out the rest

swiftnectar-35 OP

yeah i don't think i can get that to a 3hko without taking too much out of attack evs, but i shouldn't have to

royalcloud-73

You shouldn't

royalcloud-73

But that would fix the bulk issue

royalcloud-73

And let those stat spreads out a bit more

swiftnectar-35 OP

i really like the stupid amounts of water damage, so i'm gonna start with 32/32/2 in hp/attack/def and go from there

swiftnectar-35 OP

there's a tournament in a couple hours i can try a couple rounds in

royalcloud-73

Sounds good lmk how it works

swiftnectar-35 OP

will do, thanks for the help!

swiftnectar-35 OP

ok so I had to unregister from the tournament last night because i managed to forget to acquire the araquanid in-game, but i played a few more games on ladder and bo3d with a friend and it feels really comfortable- i did change mirror coat for wide guard, i'm mostly just clicking liquidation and protect anyways but there have been times where it's useful opposed to never having a good shot at mirror coating something, then I registered for the gc and won 4/5 first games!

royalcloud-73

I actually just turned my phone on to come here and say I fought an araquanid wide guard Scizor combo that just completely walked me haha

swiftnectar-35 OP

lol, it's a sign
