Gengar vs Tyranitar Team Discussion

Summary

In Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments members debate using Gengar to punish Tyranitar, covering mega choices and whether to run both or build a sand team instead. The announcement evaluates which Tyranitar checks are removed and proposes a sand roster with Excadrill, Corviknight, Incineroar, Rotom-Wash, and Milotic to handle threats like Sneas, Kingambit, and Garchomp.

Original Post

I think the concept of using gengar to punish ttar's answers seems solid, but I can't come up with a structure that actually works

Gengar vs Tyranitar Team Discussion

Reply

im confident that some combination of these mons is the answer

Reply
Reply

What are the ttar checks you are removing

Reply

ohhhh i see what were thinking of here

Reply

okay my first question is are we running dual mega gengar and ttar

Reply

well the item is why i ask

Reply

if solo mega gengar with ttar on the team non mega its a different style of play than choosing one or the other consistently

Reply

its one of the mons that works as a mega but still has utility outside of it

Reply

if you are always mega ttar then gengar has no use here on the same team

Reply

better to just build sand

Reply

seeing as how the threats we would want to counter big 3 wise are sneas kingambit and chomp

Reply

i am failing to see how gengar counters without being mega and just using him as a lock to isolate threats away from ttar

Reply

cant do that without him being mega.

Reply

honestly i would just drop gengar entirely and build sand

Reply

then bring in counters to sneas chomp kingambit

Reply

so if you ask me, out of the mon list you gave, ttar excadrill corviknight incineroar rotom wash milotic would be your team

Reply

exca outspeeds and ko's a lot of the meta in sand, corviknight gives you ground immunity and resists grass and steel attacks so its a great pivot into sneas and kingambit while also setting tailwind incin for fake out intimidate parting shot pressure to combat phys attackers that threaten. rotom wash being a second ground immunity pivot and primary answer to water that threatens tyranitar while also being a full disrupt with a set like choice scarf will o wisp volt switch tbolt trick. and then milotic to punish and deter intimidate to counter your phys attackers and cover your ground and phys weakness again with scald

Reply

not to mention the neato trick of parting shot into your own milotic for boost pivot

Reply

" rotom wash being a second ground immunity pivot and primary answer to water"

Reply

I see the vision

Reply

I think gengar can work extremely well in the meta if used correctly

Reply

But what exactly is ttar removing

Reply

im just still not sure what it checks for ttar weaknesses is the issue

Reply

It only really wants incin and maybe sinistcha

Reply

I can't reply to kane but it's removing floette

Reply

especially if gengar is non mega

Reply

You are never bringing both

Reply

That's not the point

Reply

Point is you bring the one in the mu the other struggles

Reply

then the mon list doesnt work for both megas.

Reply

unfortunately

Reply

I do think it could work but you are on slot short on twind setter

Reply

out of the mons listed, it just makes more sense to drop gengar entirely

Reply

if you bring gengar, then ttar exca take up two slots that cant be brought with it most matches

Reply

Unless you wanna go hydreigon

Reply

that leaves exactly three mons that have to support mega gengar and still fit in sand

Reply

https://pokepast.es/a6d51eedefcc271e

Reply

I could potentially see this

Reply

With defensive twind hydreigon

Reply

I don't love triple dark

Reply

But you have Sini gengar

Reply

So it could? Work

Reply

you would be pretty much locked into m.gengar incin hyd sinistcha. which doesnt cover a ton. especially if you are only bringing gengar into matches ttar isnt suited for

Reply

That's what the hydreigon idea was for mainly

Reply

Plus levitate winf

Reply

And basc is scared in triple dark

Reply

But I doubt it works

Reply

You don't have enough slots to support both

Reply

👆

Reply

I like the double mode idea but idk it can function

Reply

not with that mon list imo

Reply

Hydreigon looks like a cool fit but still there seem to be weaknesses

Reply

I high-key fw with hydreigon gengar thoooo

Reply

That seems like a good idea

Reply

What are the gengar checks this meta

Reply

main one is anyone who can eq

Reply

after that, probably kingambit being second biggest check

Reply

and fish

Reply

behind those are psychic types.

Reply

yeah thats basically my answer sans milotic

Reply

i think its best with mons given

Reply

(dies to Milo)

Reply

hm

Reply

gengar tyranitar incineroar excadrill corviknight rotom wash would be my only team i think even stood a chance for dual mega

Reply

i am still just trying to answer the original question. if he wants dual mega

Reply

i think thats the six that stands the best chance

Reply

of the mons listed

Reply

its the best i can think of with what was listed

Reply

could always just put in kingambit over sinistcha

Reply

incin*

Reply

it is a pickle

Reply

if i wanted a team that did well with both

Reply

and dealt with fish

Reply

m. gengar, tyranitar, heliolisk, rotom wash, excadrill, incin

Reply

or no fake out at all go kingambit

Reply

but you lose fire typing and intimidate.

Reply

also too much phys

Reply

ok

Reply

heliolisk is a complete wall for basc

Reply

honestly he may be cooking with hydreigon. it resists both of bascs stab

Reply

m. gengar, m. ttar, heliolisk, hydregion, excadrill, wash.

1200 Elo vs prankster mechanics

Reply

🤷 is working just fine

Reply

i always test on low ladder. thats where the unpredictability is

Reply

I have 0 clue what this thread is about. But I like ttar and I have always wanted to use ganger so am interested

Reply

he gave a mon list and asked for a team that runs dual.

Reply

honestly id just use the mon list to run sand but thats the best i can come up with while staying as close to the mon list as possible

Reply

The team actually looks fun

Reply

im trying to cook with sub optimal mons at almost 5 am on no sleep haha use at your own risk

Reply

now time for rocket league and then bed lmao

Reply

lol

Reply

I will stick to my team for now and see what is the change in season 2

Reply

Cannot bother changing again in 2 days

Reply

what i am doing

Reply

i havent touched ladder for a couple days now

Reply

no point

Reply

Icy wind is cool but I think perish is good. You have so much bulk. If you can get the opponent down to 2 mons, you basically win

Reply

I just play 1/2 matches for the vp

Reply

I mean ther are points

Reply

You can get VP, who knows if they change earnings next update

Reply

You can always climb even with old teams

Reply

i dont need more vp and a break is always good

Reply

At the end of the day it is a game. Unless you get paid heftily, it makes 0 sense to just play even if you do not feel like it. A break is better than just giving up the game

Reply

just tired haha

Reply

the solves the floette, scizor, scov, and meganium rain mus

Reply

the idea is to use the threat of gengar to stop them from bringing sneasler and gambit to every round

Reply

bc shadow tag wisp kind of just makes them fodder

Reply

What

Reply

No

Reply

Gambit will come every time

Reply

Gambit is not scared of gengar

Reply

it is when burned kowtow never kills

Reply

Gengar vs Tyranitar Team Discussion

Reply

And...?

Reply

so gambit is effectively useless after the burn and it can't switch out

Reply

which is a massive advantage

Reply

for example, you could switch in garchomp for free, sd in their face, then just win outright

Reply

depending on the partner ofc

Reply

after they've been conditioned to not lead ttar answers you can start clicking rock slide
