Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server community provides expert feedback on optimizing a Whimsicott and Gholdengo balance team. This discussion covers essential roster adjustments, including the use of Clefable and Mega Venusaur to counter common threats like Mega Staraptor, Farigiraf, and Rain teams. It is a valuable resource for competitive players looking to refine their strategies and climb the ranked ladder.
The team is built around Tailwind support from Whimsicott, with Gholdengo serving as the main offensive core.
Overall, the team has been performing well, but I've been hardstuck at my current rank and feel like I'm missing something. I particularly struggle against Mega Staraptor teams, Farigiraf teams, and Rain teams.
I'd appreciate any feedback on potential weaknesses in the team, possible roster or move set changes, matchup advice. Any insights is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I recommend garchomp, i know its boring, but i barely see answers against opposing steel types
If you struggle against mega staraptor i highly recommend clefable
due to its unaware ability it will always 2hit KO Staraptor with moonblast, it also ignores its offensive stat changes, with enough def and hp investment and a sitrus berry it will survive 2 brave birds, but might go down to the 3rd one
I've seen alot of sucess with mega venusaur against trickroom, aswell as rain, bc of its thickfat ability it gets rid of its ice and fire weakness
most swamperts run wave crash highhorse power and ice punch, so it wont hit very effectively, but hurricane pelipper or farigiraf psychic can still threaten it, unless you play it with screens
So i would replace mega Dnite with Mega Venu
Incin for Clefable
and Garchomp for either Primarina or Kingambit
Clefable wants Sitrus Berry
and Garchomp usually wants Life Orb
With Clefable next to Kingambit you could bait opposing mega Staraptors into closr combat into kingambit, simply protect him and moonblast raptor
if you dealt enough dmg you can either try and suckerpunch it next turn or, follow me Iron Head
just @ me if you want to know more or disagree with some advice and want other tips
Whats another option to venusaur? Since I currently don't have him on my account
Against Rain? I'd have to think since I'm in public rn, I can't really check
and a mega
mega against rain
hm
We have
Grass Fairy
Steel Ghost
Steel Dark
Water Fairy
Dragon Ground
so far, right?
I believe you also need something against sun teams, since you have 3 fire weaknesses
Fire and Water coverage
maybe a Water type yourself?
Water Dragon, but thats kinda overlapping
am I missing something?
Wait, what Pokémon are you even using from my suggestion
Clefable and Garchomp?
Whimsicott - Grass Fairy
Clefable - Fairy
Gholdengo - Steel Ghost
Primarina - Water Fairy
Garchomp - Dragon Ground
Okay okay
So far this is what I understood from your suiggestions. But isnt 3 fairy types kinda overkill?
Yes 3 fairys are alot
Replacing kingambit with garchomp seems better since removing primarina removes a special attacker off the team and would have to solely rely on goldengo
for special moves
correct me if my understanding is wrong
maybe Talonflame?
It covers just a bit more for steel types with either overheat or flare blitz and also gets some priority on tailwind
like replacing talonflame woth whims
you'd also be able to click earthquake on chomp next to talon, if you prefer eq
personally i prefer stomping tho
ohh intersting, so it would be:
Talonflame
Clefable
Gholdengo
Primarina
Garchomp
Yes, Gholdengo has a hard dealing with Kingambit, now Talonflame Overheat might OHKO it
I'd have to do the calcs
im pretty sure flare blitz wouldnt OHKO since kingamnit has way more def than spD
yeah i believe so, kingambit naturally has higher def than spD
252+ SpA Talonflame Overheat vs. 138 HP / 4 SpD Kingambit: 192-228 (100 - 118.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
if you want to make sure that overheat OHKOS some bulkier sets you could use charcoal or expert belt, but id say focus sash is its best item
Thank youu!
For the 6th slot im thinking of adding sinischa. For healing capabilites and wall potential to stall out some turns
does it 1hko straptor?
Ohhh i see, i'll test this out as well. Thank you for the tips!
Thank you both !
