Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server is hosting a community discussion on competitive team building for the upcoming Baltimore Regionals. This thread features a detailed breakdown of a Charizard Y and Toxapex core, seeking advice on potential swaps like Floette or Venusaur. It is a great opportunity for players to share strategies, refine their Master Ball tier teams, and gain valuable feedback from experienced trainers.
Hi! I'm not new to VGC, but I don't have any connections to anyone in the community. I haven't been able to bounce ideas off of anyone for my Baltimore regionals team, so I was hoping for any advice as to how to improve the concept.
Here's the pasted team so far: (https://pokepast.es/5090b50f1dfb90f4) (I've tried other versions but this one is the most used for me)
Here's the breakdown
The team is based around Charizard Y/ Toxapex. They cover for each other really well, and with support from the other mons on the team I'm able to create a solid game plan for mostly anything I come across.
Sylveon+ Whimsicott is an alternate lead that I use for Archaludon rain teams and other archetypes where Charizard/Whims and Charizard/Tox look harder to use. With lots of fast/powerful spread damage I can soften up the field for Charizard and friends to clean up and win the weather war.
Garchomp adds another layer to the team as well. It's really bulky (my specific spread lets it survive an opposing max attack Life Orb Garchomp Dragon Claw) and helps my matchup into mega Delphox, Tyranitar/sand and Mega Raichu Y, all of which Toxapex really struggles against. Against such teams I often lead Garchomp/whimsicott to set tailwind and compensate for my garchomp's lower speed, and once I eliminate the main threat I get Charizard in and finish the game.
I've made it as high as top 2,000 in Master Ball, but I'm currently around 15,000-ish
Even though this team works okay, I feel like it's still not in its final form. I wanna be as prepared as I can be for Baltimore, and I realize it's starting to become unproductive just bouncing ideas around in my head without any outside feedback. Sylveon and Whimsicott don't work all the time, so I've considered swapping Sylveon for floette. I've also played around with adding Venusaur as either an alternate mega or a fast coverage sweeper in the sun, but none of these ideas are fully fleshed out.
Pls help if you can, ty for reading:)
Hey we are all preparing our tourny so if u need any help u can ping or me
Being prepared is a good thing, but you should not be preparing for Baltimore regionals until MC comes out on the 4th
We don't know what mons are being added or how the meta will shift
Unfortunately Baltimore is close to a major regulation shift. Generally 3-4 weeks out is the perfect time to prepare, however you will only realistically have 2 weeks this time
I think TW the only option for speed control being a main issue.
I think swift swim will also be a real issue, personally I don't want Whimsicott living past T3, I want a free switch with 2-3 turns of TW up. ( Esp. when TW is your win-condition. )
M Floette is overall a better Slyveon.
This is a known archetype for a meta team and Floette just generally doesn't work as well here. Gambit is swapped for Venusaur in this case
True, someone else just reminded me of that😅 I didn’t know the pokemon were changing, so ty guys
It is, but that's how I see it. Meta =/= perfect. Zard-Floette has seen more use and success.
M Floette has better spread, burst - Slyveon's advantage is Fairy priority :v ( Quick Attack )

Energy ball is to deal with swift swim Swampert, as it was a big issue.
Given the open team sheets, energy ball + protect makes sense. But personally, I recently started dropping protect in favor of sunny day. :3
to add - I was about to raise the point that I don't usually see whims together with slyveon.
Its usually either, slyveon and toxapex or whims and floette.
I would give up kowtow on Kingambit for iron head as its the only mon on your team that is really able to pressure opposing floette
I didn't say meta is perfect, I said Floette generally doesn't work as well with this team. Again it's a known team with archetypes. Floette archetypes generally underperform vs sylveon
You screenshotting big six showing Floette and Charizard together does nothing to add to that conversation. This is a Yard Toxapex team, not big six
No problem, tag me on like 9/8 and I can brainstorm some ideas with you. At that point we should have the building blocks of a basic meta and how to work around it. New regulation teams are some of the most fun to theory craft and I would be happy to help you
I know that doesn't give you a lot of time and I'm sorry for that but unfortunately that's just how new reg tournaments end up working
Nah it’s all good, team building is one of my favorite parts of
could we do a tournament preparation chat?

True, it would go in tournament section . I’ll test it yeah I’ll pop it their
I just got top 4 at a tournament of 30-ish players by adding Mega Floette for Sylveon on the team
