VGC Team Building Help: Charizard Y & Meta Strategies

Summary

In the Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server, a community member is seeking advice on a Charizard Y-based team ahead of this weekend's tournament. The discussion focuses on optimizing EV spreads and move sets for meta-relevant Pokémon like Venusaur, Raichu, and Incineroar. This thread is a great resource for players looking to refine their competitive strategies and improve their performance in upcoming VGC events.

this isn't an interesting team at all, I've just decided I'd like to do well so I've just made the most metaslop team I could think of while still using mons I'd actually, yknow, have FUN using.

Played one match on ladder and lost, it was close tho and I know I lost a team select. it was a zard y mirror match so I should've brought Raichu but I had just caught a shiny charizard to use on the team and brough zard to the match over raichu which is frankly silly 😛

probably a borring team to talk about IK but I decided I want to shy away from teambuilding a little and just use good mons until I can reach my goals about my actual performance in battles, since it needs work atm

The tournament is this weekend and I'd like to get some practice in beforehand, any ideas or advice would be appreciated :)

(Charizard) @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 2 HP / 2 Def / 32 SpA / 30 Spe (maybe a more defensive ev spread?)
Timid Nature
- Heat Wave
- Weather Ball
- Solar Beam
- Protect

(Venusaur) @ Wide Lens (i love my chlorophyll + wide lens + sleep powder but not too jazzed about having two grass types.)
Ability: Chlorophyll
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 32 HP / 2 SpA / 32 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Sludge Bomb
- Energy Ball
- Protect

(Raichu) @ Raichunite Y (I think raichu is a decent anti-meta pick atm but willing to change)
Ability: Lightning Rod
Level: 50
EVs: 24 HP / 10 SpA / 32 Spe
Timid Nature
- Zap Cannon
- Focus Blast
- Fake Out
- Protect

(Whimsicott) @ Focus Sash (would rather drop whims over venu IDK I just like sleep powder too much)
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 2 HP / 32 SpA / 32 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tailwind
- Moonblast
- Encore
- Protect

(Incineroar) @ Sitrus Berry (is fine, incin is always good. willing to change moves or take ev spread suggestions)
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 32 HP / 2 Atk / 16 Def / 16 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Parting Shot
- Helping Hand
- Darkest Lariat

(Basculegion) (M) @ Colbur Berry (LWKY just kinda don't fw basc too much on a sun team. I think if any two pokemon need to change, it should be basc and one of the grass types. basc is here just because I wanted another sweeper. might switch for garchomp but I don't like the way chomp has been feeling recently, since people are starting to build around him)
Ability: Adaptability
Level: 50
EVs: 2 HP / 32 Atk / 32 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Last Respects
- Wave Crash
- Aqua Jet
- Protect

VGC Team Building Help: Charizard Y & Meta Strategies

azurecanyon-43 OP

Oh, yes, and the tournament is open team sheet, so there's nothing here that's built around surprise factor

plaidforest-21

You have trouble into Garchomp even with Whimsicott and you're very harshly punished by Kingambit

plaidforest-21

If you'd like to just do well most Zard Y teams will run Mega Aerodactyl as dual mega with Garchomp, Sylveon and Incin

azurecanyon-43 OP

Yes i just ran into the gambit problem on ladder

azurecanyon-43 OP

Raichu is too frail, a life orb sucker punch OHKOs before I can focus blast

azurecanyon-43 OP

As for chomp I haven't actually run into any on ladder yet

azurecanyon-43 OP

My plan for chomp was just to put it too sleep

azurecanyon-43 OP

I considered mega Aerodactyl, but I didn't like the idea of both my megas being weak to rain

azurecanyon-43 OP

I am finding good success with the team on ladder tonight tho, I typically play until I lose and I went on a 4 win streak

azurecanyon-43 OP

If there's any two mons I'm not feeling the synergy with atm it's incin and basc

azurecanyon-43 OP

I'm less inclined to drop incin however, i think I'd rather just switch helping hand to a coverage move

@plaidforest-21 If you'd like to just do well most Zard Y teams will run Mega Aerodactyl as dual mega with Garchomp…
azurecanyon-43 OP

Do You think dropping basc for Sylveon would be a good idea?

@azurecanyon-43 I considered mega Aerodactyl, but I didn't like the idea of both my megas being weak to rain
plaidforest-21

You can deny weather control with mega evolution but it does get awkward

plaidforest-21

Perhaps you could run the Charizard Y rain team people have been using?

plaidforest-21

If it's too complicated

@azurecanyon-43 Do You think dropping basc for Sylveon would be a good idea?
plaidforest-21

Yes

@plaidforest-21 Perhaps you could run the Charizard Y rain team people have been using?
azurecanyon-43 OP

I'd rather not honestly, managing two different weathers is obnoxious. The only rain pokemon that worries me is sableye; because if peli is the lead great I can mega turn 1 and guarantee a turn of sun. If it's not the lead, cool I know it's in the back and I get a turn of sun. When I see sableye I just don't bother with the weather war and I bring Raichu instead

@plaidforest-21 Yes
azurecanyon-43 OP

I'll give it a shot

@plaidforest-21 Yes
azurecanyon-43 OP

I am enjoying sylveon, I might suck it up and switch to chomp anyway just because sneasler and gambit are the two the team struggles with the most and they're both weak to ground (unless there's a different ground type that'd fill the nice better)

if I don't, do you have a better third move for sylv than quick attack? I'm not enjoying QA just because I'm running modest

@azurecanyon-43 I am enjoying sylveon, I might suck it up and switch to chomp anyway just because sneasler and gamb…
plaidforest-21

Quick attack is meant to finish off low HP Targets rather than be an actual main attacking move

@azurecanyon-43 I am enjoying sylveon, I might suck it up and switch to chomp anyway just because sneasler and gamb…
