VGC Team Building: Optimizing Trick Room for Tournaments

Summary

In the Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server, members are actively refining competitive teams for upcoming tournaments. This discussion focuses on optimizing a dual Mega Trick Room team, addressing specific meta threats like Pelipper, sun-rain cores, and screen-heavy Archaludon. Community members share expert advice on item choices, type synergy, and tactical adjustments to improve performance in best-of-three competitive formats.

eagergrove-31 OP

I’m entering my first tournament soon and I’m looking to make any necessary adjustments to the team. This is a dual mega team with both venu and steelix functioning inside of trickroom. The team has a ton of bulk which is nice because I don’t always have to rely on getting tr set up.
The team has gotten me to mb1 but there are some weaknesses. Most of my team struggle into pelipper if I do not have weather control. This is normally fine against pure rain teams as getting my weather isn’t too difficult; however, against the new sun rain teams it’s hard to keep tyranitar alive who is my main answer for peli.
Another problem is archaludon with screens set up. I can one or two shot arch without them but he becomes a pain with them.
The team does also have a problem with shared type weaknesses so if you have any suggestions about that let me know please.

Life orb incin??????

quickjester-17

Man anything to kill the giraffe

cleverinbox-49

Do wonder if you have found steelix fine cuz I did consider using base steelix with life orb sheer force cuz it has wide gaurd

cleverinbox-49

But regardless

cleverinbox-49

I'll say that type wise it aint rly that bad

cleverinbox-49

Against screens archaladon I actually use curse sinistcha which can rly nicely beat it

quickjester-17

Idk if scarf ttar is it in bo3

@cleverinbox-49 Against screens archaladon I actually use curse sinistcha which can rly nicely beat it
cleverinbox-49

Not sure if it will work in bo3 but it aint that gimmicky so maybe

quickjester-17

To easy to predict around and pivot to make you waste that move. Why not sash

quickjester-17

Unless it has a specific job

@quickjester-17 To easy to predict around and pivot to make you waste that move. Why not sash
cleverinbox-49

?

cleverinbox-49

Sash who

quickjester-17

Ttar

merrykitten-85

I seen sash t tar on ladder the other day -.- I don’t think it’s very viable in bo3

merrykitten-85

Tho I thought the same thing about kingambit and I see it often

@cleverinbox-49 Life orb incin??????
happykitten-50

It's genuinely good

happykitten-50

Especially on trick room

cleverinbox-49

Ye but this aint hard tr

cleverinbox-49

Ik you hard tr players would try choice band incin if that item was available

@cleverinbox-49 Ik you hard tr players would try choice band incin if that item was available
happykitten-50

Nah because I want to fake out and THEN kill myself

happykitten-50

I don't even play trick room any more haha

cleverinbox-49

I do not think they should have removed parting shot from scrafty

cleverinbox-49

Would have given it some more use in hard tr

happykitten-50

Scrafty is still good I think but definitely a secondary mega yeah

@cleverinbox-49 Do wonder if you have found steelix fine cuz I did consider using base steelix with life orb sheer…
eagergrove-31 OP

Mega steelix has been good for me. It hits really hard even without sheer force up and I haven’t had too much trouble keeping it away from special hits

@quickjester-17 To easy to predict around and pivot to make you waste that move. Why not sash
eagergrove-31 OP

Yeah I am worried about that but my concern with sash is that I like to switch ttar in to change the weather which would often have the sash be broken

eagergrove-31 OP

Maybe I could use something like chople or sitrus berry on it and make it more bulky

@eagergrove-31 Mega steelix has been good for me. It hits really hard even without sheer force up and I haven’t ha…
cleverinbox-49

I did look at the movepool ant there aren't any physical ground type moves that steelix has which have a secondary affect so ye ig mega steelix makes sense
