Shadow and Bone Book Club Pick Session 3

Summary

The Rogue Syndicate announces Shadow and Bone as the new pick for read session 3 and notes the book has a Netflix adaptation. The post also explains a canceled wrap up meeting for The Haunting of Hill House due to low morale and a holiday, and asks members to vote on whether to hold one or two meetings per session.

Original Post

Shadow and Bone is Leigh Bardugo's debut young adult fantasy novel, published in 2012, that kicks off the Shadow and Bone trilogy (followed by Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising). It follows Alina Starkov, a young soldier in the Russia-inspired nation of Ravka, who discovers she has a rare magical power to summon light, making her the key to destroying the monstrous Shadow Fold that divides her country. She is taken to a magical elite to be trained by the mysterious Darkling, but must navigate court intrigue and her own untamed power to save her nation. The book is the first in the "Grishaverse" series and was adapted into a Netflix series.

If Grisha existed in today’s world, I think their roles would shift dramatically from survival and warfare to innovation, sustainability, and problem-solving. Their abilities wouldn’t disappear or weaken, but they would evolve based on what society actually needs now.

For example, Squallers could play a huge role in environmental management. Instead of being used in combat, they could help regulate severe weather patterns or assist in renewable energy efforts, especially with wind power. In a world increasingly affected by climate change, their abilities could help prevent damage before it happens rather than reacting after the fact.

Materialki would probably thrive the most in a modern setting. Their ability to manipulate materials could completely change industries like construction, medicine, and technology. Imagine being able to create stronger infrastructure with fewer resources, or develop medical tools with a level of precision we can’t currently achieve. They wouldn’t just improve systems—we’d likely rebuild entire industries around what they can do.

Even Inferni, who are often seen as destructive, would have a place beyond that reputation. With proper training and control, they could contribute to energy production or be part of specialized emergency response teams. It’s less about fire as a weapon and more about controlled energy as a resource.

I also think their abilities would evolve in a more ethical and regulated environment. Instead of being trained primarily for power or defense, Grisha would likely go through structured education systems, similar to how we train doctors, engineers, or scientists. Their powers would become more refined, more precise, and more intentional.

Overall, in today’s world, Grisha wouldn’t just be powerful—they’d be integrated. Their abilities would shift from something feared or weaponized into something that actively supports and improves everyday life. And honestly, instead of being hidden or controlled, they’d probably end up being some of the most in-demand specialists in society.
