Hey all! Figured I’d share/ critique my crabominable team I’ve been playing so far! It’s gotten me up to mid ultra ball, though I’m hitting a roadblock there. It’s a really fun team though, just needs a bit of tweaking still!

Some flaws im working through:
- Struggles to get TR up consistently. If you make a wrong read with giraffe its over (which I do often so skill issue lol). Debating adding TR to whimsicott, or swapping it out altogether for Sinistcha with TR, tho that sacrafices this teams tailwind mode.
- Kingambit basically walls this team if you dont bring crab. Glimmora does great into zard and venasaur, but just just gets exploded by Kingambit, so I might switch it for a different mega sweeper like Excadrill or Lopunny. Or if I decide to drop the tailwind mode altogether maybe an alternative TR sweeper like torkoal? I do like having 2 mega options and tailwind mode to switch things up, but if it comes at the cost of consistency I'll just have to switch to hard TR.
The Crab Room🦀🦀🦀
- How willing to swap in a redirection mon are you? Maushold, Volcarona or Sinistcha help a lot with confirming trick room, an it can also be used to assist your out-of-room sweeper. Also also, Farigiraf's Attack ivs aren't doing anything, investing them in hp or defences will vastly increase its survivability.
- On the hard tr vs tailroom side, I'd recommend staying with tailroom, but with adjustments; how useful are rain dance and focus energy? Primarina and Hydreigon having to spend less turns setting up (ice beam/mystic water and dark pulse/choice scarf are my recs for new moves/items) will maximise the value of both trick room and tailwind.
- Glimmora. A fake out-er would also go a long way in assisting your sweepers and farigiraf, and a fighting type one would give you another option against kingambit. If you're open to it, i'd recommend swapping glimmora for sneasler; likely only to come on the tailwind side, but still a very useful mon for the times you do need it.
Omg im actually blind I meant to invest those attack IVs into defense🤦♂️
I've played around with Sinistcha before and something about it feels weird to be, I cant really explain it lol, but It is the best re-director. My only real trouble with switching it in is who it replaces, as if I swapped whimsi Id loose tailwind. Primarina is an option to swap as well, though It's been doing a lot of work especially against sun and sand teams (Thats why it has rain dance so it can weather war)
I could def switch focus energy off Hydreigon for scarf pulse, tho honestly I haven't had much issue with getting hydreigon to do what it needs. Its a very bulky build so getting a focus energy up usually isnt hard, then it just gets to spam draco meteor without worrying about stat drops.
Swapping glim for a fake out mon is a good option for tailwind mode. I played around with incin for a bit, so I might go back to him? That was my thought too with mega lopunny. It wont be used often, but it gets fake out, U-turn and close combat. The mega lopp would really just be insurance against mega gengar and perish trap since I can fake out/close combat him. Sneasler isnt bad, tho tbh I think I would rather incineroar if it game down to it
Id love to run scrafty if he were in champions but sadly we must wait for him
Although looking at it, maushold might not be bad, it kinda does all the random little things I need thats split across my team rn like rain dance and taunt along with redirection...\

That sounds like a plan, role compression is a really important part of teambuilding. I'd suggest trying out a couple diffferent team iterations on Showdown, find which one fits best.
The answer was sneasler. It always is.
I tried maushold for primarina but I really missed having her, sneasler is mostly doing the trick though.
the claw never fails, trust in her and she shall provide
Update: I made it to master ball tier! Partly cause of the sneasler help, but honestly most of it is cause I threw wide guard onto crab
People don’t know what to do once they can’t use their spread moves lol.
At least personally, I've been using drain punch over close combat
Crab is actually really bulky, he can survive a lot of supereffective hits and drain punch lets you stay alive longer. Wide guard has also been super helpful in getting TR up since it walls like half the best attackers in the game rn at least one, until they figure out you have wide guard. It lets him be helpful even once TR is gone
The thing I've learned about piloting crab that helped make me more consistent was to treat him like a lead sweeper, not a cleanup. Its honestly ok if he gets 1 or 2 key kills at the start of the game then get switched or die, and let someone else do the cleanup. Hes really tricky to switch in safely, so at this point I almost always lead him with my TR setter and keep someone else in the back for cleanup
Though you kind of dont have many options once TR goes down, and your pretty weak to priority. It would be nice to have a mid or high speed mon to help cleanup end games or to give you some non TR options.
Swapping Hatterene with farigaraf helps you get TR up safer, and maybe swapping camerupt or incin for a fast sweeper? Maybe having a mega frosslass option could be interesting
Drain punch OHKOs incin still, I think even at -1 attack you can still kill some less bulky ones
Slowking isnt terrible, it cant be taunted. Though its still weak to fake outs. Farigaraf is the best TR setter rn with armor tail, but I think slowking can work, and strong water type damage is very helpful
Drain punch
You live arch iron heads
Sometimes you OHKO, sometimes you get them to red, but usually you heal enough to either tank another one or let your partner finish it off and protect
Ill also say that, at least me personally, I havent found much use in thunder punch. I was running it for a while too, but it barely got used. Either rock slide/Iron head are usually better coverage, or wide guard if you want more support are good
But if you've been finding it helpful then keep it
It also helps having a strong special attacker next to crab like slowking or farigaraf
Ive had a lot of success with primarina, but I can see slowking kinda combining the role of primarina and your TR setter, so def experiment with that more
I just think you really need some non TR options. Dropping Hatt for like sneasler or garchomp (or any fast sweeper) and Camerupt since you never really want to use his mega over crab. Camerupt could easily be swapped with Torkoal and do the same job but without the need for the mega slot
Yea that defense boost also really helps. Being able to chilly reception into something like a Torkoal or Kingambit would be very good. Or even Sinistcha for the healing and redirection.
Personal rec is def swap camerupt for torkoal, and play around with kingambit/sinistcha for hatt/incin
Actually scratch torkoal
I’m stupid
Setting up sun right after setting up snow is the opposite of what you want😭
That’s what makes trick room teams fun is there’s a lot of fun and goofy picks
I would say Sinistcha is a good pairing for trick room. So maybe swap camerupt for Sinistcha.
Hypothetical is lead slow king and crab, TR, and chilly reception into Sinistcha
Oh I forgot he was slower. There’s usually better ways to handle torkoal tho, using a mega to do so is really expensive imo
(Like wide guard on crab, blocks eruption entirely)
Mega crabominable. I swapped it out for rock slide after I posted that version
So my crab is running 32 hp, 32 att, and brave nature.
Moveset is:
ice hammer
Drain punch
Wide guard
Protect
That’s totally fair! It can be a lot but there’s a lot to experiment with too which can be fun. Esp in weaker metas like this, you can find some niche picks. Like I got basically sweeped by a bellibolt earlier today lol
I ranted a lot but here’s my thoughts/recs
Alternative TR sweepers to camerupt/Hatt:
- Kingambit
- Sinistcha
- Sylveon (forgot to mention her earlier but also a very strong TR sweeper)
Potentially look into adding 1 more Mon to work outside of TR. you have a good game plan when using trick room, but not much else if you either loose TR or don’t bring it other than Tsareena, who isn’t really that fast. Some loose ideas to consider:
- Garchomp (one of the best mons rn)
- Sneasler
- Mega frosslass if you want to keep a snow team with a non tr mode?
- Someone you think looks cool that can hit hard and fast
Of course. I’d be happy to do some battles with you too if you wanna test some things out not on the ladder
Yea
except attack was supposed to go in defense I did a goof there
Its just a stat spread I copied from a typical farigaraf build
Stab gleams are nice, giraffe just hits really hard with hyper voice and the protection from priority moves is handy. But it just depends who feels better
Sneasler is like Incin but offensive. Get in, fake out, do big damage>
Sinistcha is a bulky support. You heal your partner every time you switch in with hospitality, you can regian health with matcha gatcha or strength sap to lower opps attack, and redirect using rage powder. Its very good at keeping your partner safe and healed.
Thats great!
Camel isnt that great tbh. I think your more than ok to swap him out
Im getting curious about trying a galar slowking variant tbh. Its more pivoting than I tend to like to do, but the chilly reception and eerie spell removing 3 pp (which is big now that protect only has 8) could be really interesting.
