Mega Ampharos Trick Room Team Guide | Pokémon VGC Strategy

Summary

The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments community is discussing a unique Mega Ampharos Trick Room strategy for ranked doubles. This thread explores optimizing team synergy, including the use of Fake Tears, defensive tech like Cotton Guard, and potential additions like Goodra or Cofagrigus to improve viability. It is a great resource for players looking to refine their competitive builds and learn how to handle non-Trick Room scenarios effectively.

Recently made this one just for fun but grew really attached to it so I'm looking for a way to make it more viable for ranked doubles. The main strategy was to oneshot everyone by ampharos+fake tears but since its a tr team you'd need a way to play when you don't have access to tr (tried compensating for that with sneasler for some reason). Any suggestions¿

The team doesn't look bad and I like Cotton Guard's tech for being +3 defense, but I think that role would be better suited to Goodra using Shelter and Body Press to disrupt physical attackers because he cant be critc

royalstream-47

Cofragius is a very solid trickrom setter with big bulk

royalstream-47

You could try adding Rilla Boom so Gardevoir and the Psyspam don't bother you so much also you heal goodra

royalstream-47

Sneasler can work with a sash, but Rilla is better at trickrom and fake out, Or maybe you could try Sneasler Iron Ball it was a set I played a lot back in the day

sageknight-29 OP

Makes sense but wouldn't cotton guard feel more reliable since I was using it mostly against physical ground attackers and goodra is weak to ground as well

sageknight-29 OP

Or should it be both cotton guard on ampharos and shelter body press on goodra

@royalstream-47 Sneasler can work with a sash, but Rilla is better at trickrom and fake out, Or maybe you could try…
sageknight-29 OP

Also thank you I'll definitely try iron ball

@sageknight-29 Or should it be both cotton guard on ampharos and shelter body press on goodra
royalstream-47

You can use both, the problem is whether you have any free turn to use It under trickrom With Goodra it's somewhat easier due to its bulk, plus Rillaboom weakens earthquake damage with Grassy Terrain

royalstream-47

Genuinely Rilla could help you a lot

sageknight-29 OP

It absolutely would I just don't want to use it out of principle

royalstream-47

I see

royalstream-47

Playing trickrom can be tricky, but I think your team has a pretty good chance

royalstream-47

That defensive swamper is good too

royalstream-47

But I would give it wide guard to help you avoid psypam or earthquakes

Swampert becomes pretty useless when he doesn't move first I should do something about that

@sageknight-29 Swampert becomes pretty useless when he doesn't move first I should do something about that
royalstream-47

I mean whit some bulk he can take hits

royalstream-47

Obviously nothing that's grass-type

rapidorange-18

This team needs alot of fixing

rapidorange-18

first off, it looks like hard trick room team and I believe adding a secondary trick room setter would help you a ton so you don't automatically lose when cofa dies

rapidorange-18

also, you're terribly weak to ground and swampert barely helps with that issue, I'd suggest swapping it for another trick room user

rapidorange-18

and replacing sylveon with primarina so you can cover your ground weakness while still keeping fairy coverage

rapidorange-18

also the movesets looks a bit off, cofa is so slow that fake tears will never work outside of trick room, I'd suggest replacing it with literally any attacking move or protect so you can keep your trick room setter alive and stop it from dying after being taunted

rapidorange-18

destiny bond will also never work outside of trick room too

rapidorange-18

also I suggest giving ampharos dazzling gleam for spread damage over cotton guard because amphy's main job is to deal damage and gaining that much defense won't help it that much and will just waste a turn of trick room at best

rapidorange-18

here's what I would do with cofa
Cofagrigus @ Leftovers
Ability: Mummy
Level: 50
EVs: 32 HP / 15 SpA / 19 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Trick Room
- Protect
- Shadow Ball
- Imprison

@rapidorange-18 and replacing sylveon with primarina so you can cover your ground weakness while still keeping fair…
sageknight-29 OP

I agree with swapping swampert and adding primarina and probably with ampharos' moveset yes

sageknight-29 OP

Definitely not changing fake tears because its the one of the main thing there

sageknight-29 OP

Thank you a lot either way

sageknight-29 OP

Giving shadow ball to cofagrigus makes sense but I also don't want to invest in spa since all the bulk investment proved itself effective throughout the time I played with it
And without spa investment shadow ball will barely deal any damage

sageknight-29 OP

But destiny bond is very situational by itself so I might change it to shadow ball mhm

@sageknight-29 Giving shadow ball to cofagrigus makes sense but I also don't want to invest in spa since all the b…
rapidorange-18

yeah but it allows you to chip just like how sinistcha has shadow ball sometimes

rapidorange-18

or how farig has psychic

sageknight-29 OP

True
