Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server hosts an in-depth discussion on optimizing a Mega Gengar and Kommo-o core. Community members explore move sets, pivot options like Incineroar and Rotom-Wash, and alternative strategies to maximize Gengar's potential beyond traditional perish trap builds. This thread provides valuable insights for competitive players looking to refine their team synergy and tactical approach in the current VGC meta.
I decided I want to revisit my first team in champions being the mega-gengar and kommo-o pairing. Right now, I am restarting from scratch using the duo. Scarf ninetales is here to fix my garchomp matchups even if they are choice scarfed. A few issues i've come along during this process is deciding what gengar's last move should be (taunt slot), whether to keep moonblast on ninetales, and last 3 members to choose from that could enable my mega gengar mode and/or pivot to another strategy (trick room for example) if mega Gengar does not work for the matchup.
did you deadass type that long just to respond with a simple sentence

perish trap is not my cup of tea thats why im avoiding it for now
i believe mega gengar has other uses outside of being a perish trap bot
haze/corrosive gas/hypnosis/pain split max phys bulk. This is the way.
forgot corrosive gas even existed
what would haze really accomplish outside of staraptor matchups
Calm mind floette, if thats even still being run. Toxic would be better but less funny
toxi 💤
haven't seen calm mind floettes in a while but they usually wouldn't set up in front of a gengar
i was today years old when i realized the moves dream eater and nightmare no longer exist
no ofc, but you gotta keep em on their toes /j
real talk, i would add incin and bulky rotom wash
both can pivot, give nice type coverage, and rotom packs speed control in eweb
this was my old team btw

probably chomp last for stab ground, but any phys ground type will do. Hippowdon is interesting cause it provides yawn next to shadow tag, but you could do that with swampert as well, freeing up a slot for replacing rotom wash. Im quite partial to gliscor (especially if you run toxic ggar, but dont do that because its pretty bad)
i was genuinely on crack with the kommo-o build
Unironically, palafin could be great with gengar, facilitates the flip turn pivot by how much pressure it applies
i am keeping mind of zard Y and trick room matchups
and tailwind as well
zard Y can easily run through my team without kommo-o to wall it assuming it does not run air slash
tsareena gives prio blocking, grass stab, and u turn. Although if you are saying TW/TR is the concern, a whimsicott may be on order. Can run both and still have moonblast and either protect or encore.
encore whims with disable gengar is interesting personally
im also considering disable on gengar as a taunt replacement
but i already have fast encore with ninetales
They nerfed Gengar so hard
I believe his ability also change (?)
It's really good together though lol
Offensively
Covers the fairy weakness
Also traps Pokémon that are weak to it
As an added bonus
So he can setup freely
I see this gengar more frequently these days
Does make team preview confusing
Pretty sure last one I battled had a non mega Zard
exactly why im running kommo-o as a gengar partner but im still having trouble slotting in the last 3 members
Low-key like the idea lemme think
Do you not want shadow ball
It's good offensively
Usually gengar is offensive if not in perish song
It is really strong
i was holding onto shadow ball
if i cant make any other move work ill go shadow ball
theres still the elephant in the room
3 slots left
