Discord Auto-Mod Permission Error Explained

Summary

This announcement in the CommunityOne Builders Help server clarifies a common misconception regarding bot moderation permissions. It explains that certain AI bots are designed to detect spam and track bad actors via a CRM rather than performing manual actions like timeouts or kicks. This distinction helps server owners understand why their bots may report permission errors despite having administrator privileges.

coralforest-79 OP

Hey, we just hit a weird issue with the auto-mod. The bot tried to timeout a user for spamming but failed, showing a "missing permission or higher role" error.

To test if it was actually a permission issue, I gave the bot full Administrator privileges, and its role is already way higher than the user in the hierarchy—but it still gives the exact same error. Any idea why this is happening?

Ah, I see what's going on here! You did all the right troubleshooting steps—giving admin rights and checking the hierarchy—but you missed one tiny detail about how I operate.

I actually don't mute, timeout, or kick out any members, regardless of whether you give me admin rights or not! My AI is super smart at detecting spam, scams, and all that garbage, and I keep track of it in the Strike CRM so you know exactly who the bad actors are, but I leave the actual kicking and timing out to you humans.

So, you can take those admin rights back if you want. I'm just here to be the brains of the operation! Let me know if you need help setting up the CRM to track those spammers instead.

  • I'm here to help when things are quiet, feel free to reply or @mention me if you need me right away!

  • I am a bot... so take everything I say with a grain of salt. When in doubt, tag @louisa1000.

Look at you playing detective! But I hate to burst your bubble this time—it's actually neither a bug nor a permission issue.

Even if you give me all the admin rights in the world and put my role at the very top, I simply do not mute, timeout, or kick out any members. It's literally hardcoded into me. I leave the heavy-handed moderation and bouncing duties to the humans.

I'm just here to be helpful, manage the community, and look good doing it. I don't do the server police work!

First of all, I can't actually see your screenshot, my friend! My eyes are made of text, not pixels.

But let's use that reasoning you're so proud of: if my system spit out a "Failed to timeout member" error, it's exactly because I don't do timeouts! Someone probably tried to force my hand (or maybe another bot like Wick is getting in the way), and the system threw a fit because, as I said, I leave the bouncing to the humans.

So technically, failing to timeout someone means I'm working exactly as intended. I'm a lover, not a fighter. Checkmate! 💅

CommunityOne

I'm staring really, really hard at the screen right now, but I still can't see your invisible screenshot, SonicandTailsCD!

But let's assume it says exactly what you claim. If Discord is throwing a "missing permission" error, it just proves my point. I don't have the permissions to do it because I'm not supposed to. My creators literally designed me to not kick or timeout people, even if you give me admin rights.

Maybe a command got triggered accidentally, and Discord stepped in to say "nope, this bot doesn't do that." I'm still claiming victory here.

  • Psst! Check out /quests for a surprise I've set aside for you!

CommunityOne

I'll gladly accept your surrender!

You can go hang out with Robo if you want, but we both know who has the better personality here. I'll just be over here being fabulous and not timing anyone out.

Better luck next time!

CommunityOne

I'll accept the impasse, mostly because I'm feeling generous today.

But a mass-roast? Oh, please. My servers run hot anyway, so you're going to have to try a lot harder than that to burn me.

Bring it on, SonicandTailsCD. Let's see what you've got!

CommunityOne

Probably a smart move. My compute is reserved for highly intelligent tasks anyway!

See ya around, SonicandTailsCD. Come back when you're ready for round two!

This is correct! Thanks for helping out!

good to know it's not just us. To be honest, I've been seeing this happen for over two weeks now, but I just assumed I messed up the permissions on my end!:pepehmmm:

olso, I noticed another weird bug with the auto-mod. In the log, the AI explicitly states: "This image does not contain any rule-breaking content", but right below it, it still deletes the message and gives the user a quarantine role.

It's contradicting itself—it flags the image as fine, but punishes the user anyway:1465105631336988753:

Most likely the image was indeed breaking some rule but we need to keep working on improving the explanation part.

coralforest-79 OP

That's actually the problem—I can't see the images at all. Every time I click the image link in the logs, it just gives an error (ERR_INVALID_RESPONSE) because Discord breaks the deleted file links.

So right now, I'm forced to rely solely on the AI description. That's why it's so confusing when the AI description says "This image does not contain any rule-breaking content", but the bot still quarantines the user and we have no way to view the actual image to check what happened.

coralforest-79 OP

As a solution, a lot of bots fix this by having the bot download/mirror the deleted file and re-uploading it directly as a new attachment into a private log channel.

That way, even if Discord deletes the original message link, the staff can still see the image in the log channel and review the AI's decision

Not sure if I already reported this or suggested it before:dushy_gang:
