hi!! so i'm a noob to competitive, only been playing champions the past couple months with zero prior vgc experience. i've definitely learned a fair bit already since starting through both experience and watching videos, but i could totally use some advice on how i should build a team around eelektross - a mon i've really grown to love using lately, especially with its new mega.

here are the two teams i've been messing around with: first one is just a bunch of my fave mons in general (i know my basculegion should be male but i just love the fem design so much 😭), second is a water-based team using more conventional meta options.

i've had decent success with both, ESPECIALLY with my eel knowing both a ground type move and a good phys electric move. been able to take down charizard, raichu, and the occasional bellibolt pretty reliably. i always have him out first with toxapex, who can take a hit and protect when needed.

that being said - i've been stuck in ultra tier and today had a bad losing streak that got me down to great 💀 i think archaludon is one of my biggest threats, since not only can it basically blast through my water team, but it's extremely beefy and hard to grind down even with super effective moves. cannot STAND that stupid bridge. sinistcha is also a thorn in my side.

and my latest loss.....was with my first team (specifically escher, flurry, tropica, and caliburn, in that order) against an oranguru with trick room and instruct, mega blastoise that used protect first thing (so my supercell slam missed and gave me a lot of recoil), and torkoal. didn't even get to see what the fourth mon they had was lol.

what could i do better with my teams? how do i better strategize? do i really need to wipe the slate clean for the team of just my faves, or can i make them work? who, if anyone, should i switch out on either team? again, i'm a noob to vgc so i'm very much still learning. tysm for ur patience w me in advance!!! 🙂‍↕️💙

Hello ; here to help!

Let's break down everything into manageable bits. Basculegion is a good place to start since we can also go over some key concepts of the game!
1. Male Basc =/= Female Basc;
Yes, they do share the same abilities. But unlike other 'mons ( or like other mons ) they have a 20-stat gap between genders.
Male Basculegion are Physical ( 132 base ATK / 100 SpA ) vs Female Basculegion are Special ( 112 ATK / 120 SpA ) Attackers.
Male Basculegions are usually ran with; Aqua Jett, Wave Crash, Head Smash, Last Respects
All of which are physical moves. ( Physical, Special and Status )

What are **physical ** moves?
Physical moves are moves that make contact AND ( more importantly ) makes use of your ATK stat against your opponents DEF stat.
These are your Close Combat, Rock Slide, Earthquake. You can usually tell via the 8-pointed star icon on the moves.

Using Seafoam as an example; SURF is using the 108 SpA ( which is lowered / hindered by nature of choice ie. Adamant )

What are **special ** moves?
Physical moves are moves that does make contact ( most of the time ) AND makes use of your SpA stat against your opponents SpD stat.
These are your Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Earth Power. You can usually tell via the water ripple icon on the moves.

Using Escher as an example; we usually run Mega-Eel as an SpA given how many Intimidates ( Ability that passively lowers your ATK ) and much better is his Move Pool ( Moves he can learn ) that has special typing. He can also run electric, fire and grass moves - giving him *coverage * ( number of types he can hit for SUPER EFFECTIVE )

brightkernel-65

What are status moves?
Status moves are moves that do not directly deal damage. They can be buffs ( ie. +1 ATK ), debuff ( ie. -1 ATK ), conditions ( ie. poison or burn ), hazards ( ie. Spikes ), Screens ( ie. Reflect ) Protects ( ie. Protect / Detect ) or Battlefield conditions ( ie. Tailwind / Trick Room )

Unlike Physical and Special moves, Status moves do not use your ATK or SpA stat to calculate damage. You can usually tell them apart by the grey swirl/circle icon on the move.

Using Seafoam as an example: Protect is a Status move. It doesn't matter whether Basculegion has 132 ATK or 100 SpA—Protect doesn't use either stat.

With fundamentals out of the way, you probably can tell - you've been grinding with a huge handicap. So gj!
Team 1 has lack of ways to control speed ( initiative ); individually they are sound but in doubles its like having two different 'mons than having a pair on the field.

Another thing,
We usually run Mega-Eel as an SpA given how many Intimidates ( Ability that passively lowers your ATK ) and much better is his Move Pool ( Moves he can learn ) that has special typing. He can also run electric, fire and grass moves - giving him *coverage * ( number of types he can hit for SUPER EFFECTIVE )

Team 2;

Definitely closer to what you'd see on a mono-type rain team!
Typings and coverage aside; in terms of roles there a definite overlaps ( in a way the 'mons trying to be jack of all trades and master of none )

Happy to guide your from scratch just lmk 2-3 'mons you'd like to keep as core!

@brightkernel-65 With fundamentals out of the way, you probably can tell - you've been grinding with a huge handicap…
silverinbox-63 OP

srry for the late response; ty for the advice!! i'm honestly surprised to hear most ppl run eel as a sp attacker given the sheer amount of phys moves in its movepool :0

as for another core mon to use w escher on my faves team tho....hrmm. are there any benefits with fem basculegion whatsoever? ówò
if not, im gonna be real, i have no clue lol. maybe if u could figure smthn out with any combo of the others on that first team at all, that'd be awesome!
but also i've been realizing.....i don't really have a good defensive mon on that one, either. i do like aggron if that helps? i just haven't ever used it enough. but i also know an earthquake would hit it harddd. xP

also, any tips on actually giving better roles to mons on my water team would be appreciated!

@silverinbox-63 srry for the late response; ty for the advice!! i'm honestly surprised to hear most ppl run eel as…
brightkernel-65

Okay, I think I need to see how you like playing this comp.
Would you be able to describe it as Blanced or HO?

silverinbox-63 OP

unsure what HO means!

brightkernel-65

Hyper Offense!

silverinbox-63 OP

hmm....i do generally focus more on offense, yeah. but i'm willing to experiment! i like using drain punch on escher for healing, and i did try out rock slide in place of iron tail earlier which i think is an upgrade since it both lowers speed and hits both opponents at once. i typically have him and alolan ninetales out first, since fairy types have decent coverage and i have the opportunity to freeze opponents with blizzard. everyone else is more or less interchangeable, just depends on the typings i'm matched up against. i should prob use my salazzle more to set up toxic spikes at least....i love her but she's so easy to take down 😭

brightkernel-65

Let's do it one at a time!

  1. Not using Male Basculegion kinda hurts you. If we want a fast non-mega water SpA.
    Greninja would be very nice!

  2. Drain Punchers are usually on setup teams OR some balanced-mons.
    If we're going HO, we want STABs or high base power moves ie. Close Combat or Superpowers

  3. Think about 'mons you like playing with! Eelektros, can be considered setup mons.
    We'll talk more about that later, for now just pick your favorites!

silverinbox-63 OP

let's see.....i do like using alolan ninetales, and i have been rlly enjoying tsareena lately! i also like using delphox on occasion even tho it's not on my team here.
as much as i love aegislash, it - like salazzle - is also a lil frustrating to use sometimes bcus everyone and their mother seems to have a good counter for it prepared. kinda gave up on hydreigon recently for the same reason. ;w;

brightkernel-65

That's a start! Now, we classify them into differemt categories.

  1. Alolan Ninetails - Weather T ( SpA ) - Utility / Support / Secondary Sweeper
  2. Delphox - Balanced, HO, Setup ( SpA ) - Sweeper / Wallbreaker
  3. Aegislash - Balanced, Setup, TR ( SpA // Atk ) - Setup Sweeper / Bulky Attacker / Defensive Utility
  4. Salazzle ( SpA ) HO, Balanced - Sweeper / Utility
  5. Hydrogedon ( SpA ) - Balanced, HO, Setup - Special Sweeper / Wallbreaker / Setup Sweeper

So from here we try and pick 2 ( ideally a ATK sweeper and another SpA Sweeper ) with complimentary typing.

silverinbox-63 OP

i am curious abt how to set up aegislash if it's considered bulky + defensive!
feeling a bit stuck between the two foxes though. bcus ice moves are particularly great against the most common dragons i see like garchomp and dragonite, but a strong fire move is also pretty useful + mega delphox having levitate is always a plus

brightkernel-65

By setup it can mean 2 things;

  1. Moveset
  2. Ingame setup; he just need Swords Dance and he can hit with 1-STAB ( Ghost / Steel ) and 1 Coverage

2 foxes has different niche;
Alolan Ninetails - basically a screen/weather setter but kinda worse as a check against Garchomp. You're better off with the faster ones with an ice move - since Garchomp basically dies on a slight chilly breeze. His Blizzard is more of a consistent spread. Better for slower tempos / balanced

Ninetails is the faster non-mega sun setter, but he lacks the screen ie. Aurora Veil bust makes up with Will-o-Wisp, Encore, Disable, Helping Hand, Safe Guard. Perfect for HO!

brightkernel-65

M Delphox still needs some help like TW and redirection, we can make it work. Just lml if you wanna commit to M Delphox

silverinbox-63 OP

i was more thinking abt where to allocate stats for aegislash, but the swords dance tip is useful, ty!!

and oh regular ninetales would be a good in-between of what i'd considered, huh. def taking note of that ^^

silverinbox-63 OP

so eel, aegislash, and ninetales sounds pretty good so far. would dragalge be able to work with them at all? i can't believe i forgot it when mentioning my faves lol

@silverinbox-63 i was more thinking abt where to allocate stats for aegislash, but the swords dance tip is useful,…
brightkernel-65

Hello , sorry about the lag between replies - was busy yesterday. Haha
So it really depends, on what do you see Aegislash is doing for the team.

ie. He can be;
[ Trick Room Wall Breaker ]
Brave + ATK -SPD - 32HP 32ATK 2 DEF
- King's Shield
- Sacred Sword
- Poltergeist / Shadow Sneak
- Sword Dance

[ Trick Room ] but as check for M Staraptor
Brave + ATK -SPD - 32HP 32ATK 2 DEF
- Protect
- Zen Headbutt
- Shadow Sneak
- Destiny Bond

[ Perish Trap ]
Impish + DEF -SpA 32HP 17 Def 17 SpD
- King's Shield
- Block
- Poltergeist / Shadow Sneak
- Sword Dance / Iron Head

** Sword Dance creates pressure ie. +2/4 Aegislash is an equal target as M Gengar
*** Iron Head gives you options to hit Fairies but M Gengar usually has a Poison STAB so I personally prefer SD

EV spreads and movesets are usually case to case - some sets are very common due to the meta dictating them to fit a certain niche.

brightkernel-65

Right now, speed wise - the team is not bad.
Eelektros and A Ninetails are both in the same category. :
Aegislash and Draglele are both slow.

In terms of coverage; both megas have quite the coverage - but are ultimately different mechanically.
Here's an example of how I would build one.

Notice how the 2 remaining 'mons have their speed bracket matches the pokemon they're looking to support. ( I omitted Aegislash only for the demonstration )

Eelektross-support;

Rotom family has access to the skill Electric Terrain; something you need to turn Rising Voltage from a 70 base to a 140 power STAB + the added bonus against vivillion matchups. Rotom-Wash also has a typing and resistance to Fire types which we are most exposed with ie. A Ninetails, Aegislash and Sinistcha ( not to mention access to Hydro Pump - so we can cover Fire, Grass and Water move coverages. )

Electroweb, Icy Wind should and would be used as a form of speed control since we cannot fit a TW pokemon in the roster.

Dragalge-support

We're going for TR Dragalge // Aegislash

Sinistcha can setup TR, usually the one ignored on the field - but is a poor lead against Zard-weather spammers.
Sinistcha should be able to switch in to EQ but not fire moves, hence why we want Rotom-W
Sinistcha switching in keeps Aegislash healthy. And switching, Dragalge is fine - his ability gives him some HP back from damage he takes switching in/out.

Spiritomb is the more consistent of the two when setting Trick Room, ensuring you get the TR up at Turn 1.
Spiritomb can help with dealing damage out of Trick Room AND setup Dragalge/Eelektros ( since Toxic chips opposing mons for M Eelektross to sweep for a SpA boost ) for success by leaving opposing 'mons with poison in which we use M Dragalge to sweep with 130 power STAB veno shock + the Toxic status.
Spiritomb can also spread the damage around by using Ally Swap to tank fire-type moves.
