Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server is hosting a deep dive into building a competitive team around Mega Victreebel for Doubles Ranked play. This discussion explores a unique 'kamikaze support' strategy using Acid Spray and Strength Sap to debuff opponents. Community members are collaborating to refine the team's frailty issues and optimize the synergy between Victreebel and special attackers like Vanillux and Gholdengo.
So, im the type of player who tries to make underrated pokémon somehow work, i did it with Mega Chandelure and now i wanted to try it with Mega Victreebel.
I created that team on a whim and played a few rounds with it.
A key problem i noticed is that my offensive pokémon are too frail to keep living loong enough.
Since my games language is in german, ill translate the whole movepool in my second message.
The core idea of that team is to let Mega Victreebel a debuff pokémon for the enemy team,
the team is designated to be played in Doubles Ranked

Gimme a moment to translate the whole moveset
Victreebel / Victreebelite
Giga Drain
Acid Spray
Strength Sap
Protect
Aerodactyl / Aerodactylite
Rock Slide
Dual Wingbeat
Ice Fang
Tailwind
Gholdengo / Leftovers
Make it Rain
Shadow Ball
Nasty Plot
Protect
Incineroar / Citrus Berry
Fake Out
Throat Chop (Is indeed called Nack Strike in German)
Flare Blitz
Parting Shot
Rotom / Magnet
Thunderbolt
Hydro Pump
Will O Wisp
Protect
Vanillux / Choice Scarf
Freeze-Dry
Blizzard
Light Cannon
Icy Wind
To get into more detail
I want Victreebel to be a kamikaze support pokémon. Beeing a threat to spread moves like heat wave, earthquake, Blizzard or single target attacks like brave bird if switched in right.
Letting Victreebel beeing one shottet by those would for example take out stuff like Frosslass, Mega Charizard Y, or even Staraptor
im running Acid Spray, Strength sap and Giga drain to debuff the Special defense for my Special attackers like Vanillux, Gholdengo and Rotom yet at the same time taking the offensives from my enemy with strength sap and keep myself a bit longer in the game if im not getting instandly one shottet.
I used Incineroar to shrink down the attackers offensives even more that could threaten my pokémons like Sneasler CC into my incin and vanillux, or Kingambit Sucker punch into my Gholdengo while also shrinking special attackers offensives a bit with parting shot and shutting down Incoming Hyper voices from Farigiraf and Sylveon with throat chop
Rotom Runns will o wisp for the purpose of cutting hard hitting pokémons attack stat in half
Aswell as rotoms purpose to deal with pokémon like Ttar, Excadrill or in specific: Basculegion
Vanillux is here since i want a bit of weather controll, Snow seemed for me to be the best shot here since sun would bring my gholdengo in a more disadvantous position, Rain would harm my Incineroar and Aerodactyl and a sandstorm would give my whole team chip DMG and could buff enemy teams against mine perfectly if they run a sandstorm based team.
Snow doesnt put my team in a disadvantous position against any weather team, exept victreebel but that one is fine since i more or less want it to get knocked out
I also intended to give vanillux icy wind for a bit of speed control and freeze dry to take care of pokémons like Swampert which would take 4x the damage
Light canon here is a move which i believe could be changed into something better, i picked that for a just in case situation where gholdengo is allready
knocked down
Aerodactyl is another souce of speed control with offensive potential, if i dont bring victreebel with me i would mega evolve aerodactyl and let cover for ground types with my allready 3 pokémon who are weak against it, aswell as letting aerodactyl handle Mega Charizard Y, Sneasler Garchomp and be a bit dissuptive with flinching and potential freezing from Icy Fang
Gholdengo is the power house whom i intended to have a free switch from incin or vanillux into gholdengo if the enemy wants to use fake out or CC into one of them aswell as just doing big dmg with nasty plot and the support from victreebels SpD lowering move

All that beeing said, i believe my EV spreads can be better on many of my mons.
I have my Supposition that i have EV that are just overkill.
For example on vannilux, core goal of it is taking out stuff like Garchomp in one hit most of the time even if it is the tankiest one out there
i have 176 SpA on it, lets say i needed only 150 for garchomp, then i'd have 26 ev points ,,Wastet" yk?
And i think there might be overall improvement for that team and what it is designated for
Really that much? XD
Bro we don’t use more 516 evs
But ok you need better evs
Let me see what I can do
Yk what i mean i think.
I just wanted to say that i might think that the EV spreads of my offensive mons could be better
yet i wouldnt know in which way yk?
But I’m not reading all this text
Can you send the problematic mons and the paste?
well dont need to read it all, its a description for every one of my team members. what they there for and what i planned them todo yk?
And second think why are you running protective moves in a Mon that do you want to die?
Isn’t that like contradictory?
Use more offense
Run like max hp max spa
And a dicricing spd nature
(Max hp is for maximum damage ,oki doki?
it firstly is but what if you dont get OHKO'd and victreebel and idk fake out seems to be a significant danger to knock out victreebel.
My Mega would get taken care of with low value for me yk?
If i would protect it and read my enemy that would want to secure the knockout i would get a much better positioning yk?
Yeah but acid spray?
Lowers SpD
So Victreebel could heal much from giga drain and open the door for my other special attackers yk?
Ah right
Yeah, I actually really like the idea behind this team.
Mega Victreebel being used as a weird support/debuff Pokémon is cool. It is not trying to just sweep. It is trying to make the opponent’s board weaker with Acid Spray, Strength Sap, and awkward pressure, then let Pokémon like Gholdengo, Rotom, and Vanilluxe punish those drops.
The biggest issue is exactly what you already noticed: the team is a bit too frail right now. A lot of the Pokémon are fast and offensive, but they do not always live long enough to actually use the support you are building around.
The biggest change I would make is Vanilluxe → Focus Sash with Aurora Veil instead of Choice Scarf.
Choice Scarf gives you speed, but it does not fix the team’s main problem. Aurora Veil does. With snow up, Vanilluxe can set Veil and suddenly Victreebel, Gholdengo, Rotom, and Aerodactyl all become much harder to remove.
I would also give Aerodactyl Protect over Ice Fang. Vanilluxe already covers Dragons, Garchomp, and Ground/Flying stuff well enough. Aerodactyl really wants Protect because otherwise it sets Tailwind once and often just dies.
The cleaner version would look like this:
Victreebel @ Victreebelite
Ability: Chlorophyll
Level: 50
EVs: 28 HP / 14 Def / 12 SpA / 12 Spe
Modest Nature
- Giga Drain
- Acid Spray
- Strength Sap
- Protect
Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Unnerve
Level: 50
EVs: 2 HP / 32 Atk / 32 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Slide
- Dual Wingbeat
- Tailwind
- Protect
Gholdengo @ Leftovers
Ability: Good as Gold
Level: 50
EVs: 18 HP / 32 SpA / 16 Spe
Timid Nature
- Make It Rain
- Shadow Ball
- Nasty Plot
- Protect
Incineroar @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 32 HP / 12 Def / 22 SpD
Careful Nature
- Fake Out
- Throat Chop
- Flare Blitz
- Parting Shot
Rotom-Wash @ Magnet
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 20 HP / 4 Def / 28 SpA / 14 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect
Vanilluxe @ Focus Sash
Ability: Snow Warning
Level: 50
EVs: 12 HP / 28 SpA / 26 Spe
Timid Nature
- Freeze-Dry
- Blizzard
- Aurora Veil
- Protect
The main idea would be:
Vanilluxe makes the team bulkier with Aurora Veil.
Victreebel weakens things with Acid Spray and Strength Sap.
Gholdengo, Rotom, and Vanilluxe punish the Acid Spray drops.
Incineroar and Rotom keep physical attackers under control with Intimidate, Parting Shot, and Will-O-Wisp.
Aerodactyl gives Tailwind and fast Rock Slide pressure.
So instead of Victreebel just dying for value, the better version makes the opponent hate both options.
If they attack Victreebel, they risk triggering its kamikaze value.
If they ignore Victreebel, it starts dropping SpD, healing with Strength Sap, and making their attackers weaker.
The best leads would probably be:
Incineroar + Vanilluxe when you want the safest start. Fake Out helps Vanilluxe get Aurora Veil up.
Victreebel + Gholdengo when you want pressure straight away. Acid Spray makes Gholdengo’s damage scary fast.
Aerodactyl + Victreebel when you want Tailwind and fast debuff pressure.
Incineroar + Victreebel into physical teams, because Intimidate + Strength Sap can make their attackers feel useless.
Overall, I think the concept is good. The main fix is not changing the whole identity — it is giving the team more survival so the Victreebel plan actually gets time to work.
Sorry thought it was an another move
Acid armor
I mean i think is pretty good
Why do you want to refine more
Victribel is just dog shit so you aren’t going to win like worlds with it that is more for surprise ladder factor right?
That! That is EXACLY what my team needed. Focus sash, Auroraveil vanillux.
I honestly also suggested Alolan Nince tails but it is not an offensive pokémon, so idk about that.
Let me see the evs spread
i also thought about gholdengo having the life orb but the more i think about it, the more it seems unreasonable since victreebel would provide the dmg boost just in another way.
Or am i trippin?
32 Atk Tough Claws Aerodactyl-Mega Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 32 HP / 0 Def Victreebel-Mega: 208-252 (111.2 - 134.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Just run max hp max speed
32+ SpA Charizard-Mega-Y Heat Wave vs. 32 HP / 0 SpD Victreebel-Mega in Sun: 242-288 (129.4 - 154%) -- guaranteed OHKO
i also noticed that its a bit difficult to get value out of acid spray, my offensive pokémons are all faster so i would get said value on turn 2
Idk if that would make a big problem, i mean i could go forth and use nasty plot with gholdengo turn 1 for example to unleash monstrious ammount of dmg turn 2
But it must life up to that turn first
Any suggestions on that part?
i'll try that out. Many thanks to the both of you
Ill send my new insights into that team in here if i notice something new
Easy
ok so i allready notice 2 things
i have severe problems against Sucker punch users, especially Kingambit and Mawhile and i may have to switch vanillux with Alolan ninetails
(Ignored)
Could you send the team ?
For whom? Victreebell?
Yep max hp max speed vic
does it rlly makes sense for vanillux to get EV in HP? its most likely 2shot either way
That was the reason it has sash no?
shouldn't i go Full Speed and SpA with it?
Ye the team is beyond shit.
Either that or the game just really wants to mess with me
i encountered 5 times in a row, steel type based teams and within those SNARL on Incineroar and Hydreigon
idk how to play against that honestly
I feel like there are just too many counters to ,,debuffing" as of now
like, Defiant Anihilape and Kingambit,
Steel types in general with immunity on acid spray
maybe its just not the right time for now to play Mega Victreebel
I think i need to switch out a Pokémon to counter Said matchups a bit better
I thought about having incineroar switched out with Houndoom
Playing a set on it with Snarl, Will o wisp, Flamethrower and protect
Also thought about having Vendetta instead of snarl but i prefer the SpA drop on both enemys, would also be another SpA that could take care of steel types and Archaludon in specific
Tho idk if it is tanky
So, i replaced rotom for Cofagrigus since it can lower SpD with Shadow ball and Fake tears, making openings for the Special attacking Pokémon
I also gave Vanillux Protect, i had often moments where a protect would be far more sufficient than icy wind. I also didn't used icy wind much and thus it was a wastet attack on vanilluxe.
Cofagrigus also is especially made to counter steel types or Pokémon that neutralize or provide from lowering stats, mummy takes care of clear body and defiant as much as doing absurd Physical dmg with Body press for Kingambit. I gave it the dark resist berry so lure enemy kingambits into attacking Cofagrigus so it gets mummy wich opens the door for incineroar to get intimidate in and breaking Kingambits atk more down IF Cofagrigus cant use body press because of some encore or stuff.
Incineroar lost the Flare blitz here, i didn't used it much aswell, many Pokémon that are weak to fire are allready taken care of by other Pokémon on my team and since it's made out to be a Special attacking team and lowering enemy stats, i found not much use for a Physical recoil fire move.
Will O Wisp would provide more survive ability to the team and incineroar itself
Tell me what you think about the changes

As far as i tested THAT constellation out, it is extremely hard to play because your reading and positioning matters MUCH MUCH more than in comparison to any of the Meta teams
Valid positive point is that many opponents do not know what they're up against
