Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server is hosting a deep dive into competitive team building. This discussion focuses on optimizing a Blastoise and Delphox core, exploring strategic swaps like Scarf Meowscarada to counter meta threats. Members are sharing insights on EV spreads and team synergy to help players climb to Masterball rank, making it an essential resource for those looking to improve their competitive performance.
I’m currently running around MB 1.6-1.7 with a pretty standard Blastoise and Delphox Team, I felt like Kingambit was on the field almost never so I switched it for scarf meowscarada, to better answer some Threats to the Team. (Scarf) Basculegion and Garchomp especially but it also helps against Rainteams with tech against Blastoise and to a lesser extent to Oberwhelm some Giraffes before they can Set Up trickrooms. However the original team was in High Champion for a reason and I’m a bit cautious, if I overcooked simply because I don’t understand how to play around the threats and/or don’t know how to use Kingambit yet. Any input is highly appreciated.

I can show you my mega blastoise team if you like to and get you some inspiration, I'm almost masterball rank with it, within just 2-4 hours and went #1000 previous season with it
I can also help you a little with your evs, since they seem pretty bald in my opinion
That would be cool, thanks! yeah i think the only ev optimized mon is Incin rn. Otherwise i'm a "When in doubt 32 32 2" kinda guy. I'm pretty new to VGC and team building, especially team building, is new territory.
I will hop on my pc and tell you details about the ev spreads, aswell as synergy on this team
It's more of a rain team, but very interesting and good for learning for sure

I'll wait for you to finish texting, before I start explaining
Oh yeah, i see. I got to Masterball with a Swampert rainteam, but switched off it when i got Delphox. I don't like the bridge (from a charackter design pov only).
But if you have time, i really appriciate a quick how-to in EV spreads
So when I first created this team my first choice was Mawile
Since its my favourite Pokémon of all time and has one of the strongest abilities ever created.
I figured out very quickly that that Mawile really struggles against sun teams, so I added rock slide, instead of the usual iron head, but that wasn't enough to beat sun teams
So I added Pelipper, to shut down chari Y's with ease. With Tailwind and Wideguard (i accidentially used protect here) it can really support mawile, being safe from earthquakes, heatwaves, rock slide flinches, eruption, muddy water, matcha gotcha burn etc
Bridge was a no-brainer to mawile, since these 2 pokemon create one of the strongest steel-fairy-dragon type core, with stamina, leftovers and enough defensive investment it would sit on the field forever and boost itself with electroshot
I needed a Pokémon that can keep my bridge and mawile save, from moves like stomping tantrum or close combat, so i added a sisnistcha with lifedew, aswell as trickroom
Since Mawile has 75 speed it outspeeds pokemon like incineroar in trickroom, but also outspeeds pokemon such as gholdengo or not scarfbasculegions in tailwind (Max speed Bascu 143, max speed Dengo 149 speed. Mawile 75+Tailwind= 150)
Now I needed another mega Pokémo to cover bad matchups for mawile, i figured out that mawiles biggest weaknesses were fire and ground pokemon, so I added Blastoise with the ability rain dish
NOW IT REALLY BEGUN TO CLICK FOR ME
with drizzle being active it would constantly heal blastoise for a bit of its hp, constantly increasing water spouts damage output, with sinistcha and lifedew easily healing it up even more and keeping up that damage output, with 127 speed and shell smash it outspeeds mega swampert with swift swim, but you dont always need to shell smash here, nor do you need to mega. With 127 its still slow enough to make use of trickroom and could work as a water spout sweeper next to mega mawile, which are both capable of one-hitting pokemon in either trickroom or tailwind
With shell smash and rain active not even pokemon that resists water would survive such water spouts
Incineroar is here to keep everything intact
With intimidate, fake out and parting shot it can easily help your sinistcha setting up trickroom, setting up tailwind with pelipper or setting up shell smash with blastoise
With parting shot you have a great way to win weather wars, since you can switch out pelipper, parting shot and sent pelipper right back in, giving you the weather control again
It's one of my best teams so far
I will explain evs as soon as you finished reading all this
I hope it could get you some inspiration on teambuilding
Nice writeup, Thank you! When do you Mega Evolve Blastoise? Bc the raindish heal keeps waterspout strong, but where is the cut-off poit where the megaform becomes more viable? I feel like i pulll the Mega trigger too fast in my rain match-ups.
basicially when I dont bring mawile
That would be in very hard sun team match-ups, or when I see good chances to set up shell smash
For example I'm not gonna be scared of annihalpe maushold, since sinistcha can rage powder, so beat up attacks my sinistcha = not boosting rage fist, and than rage fist will hit sinistcha aswell with a 50 basepower
so its very easy for me to shell smash here and swap in pelipper right afterwards to create 100% ohko's
For the EVs
Mawile was pretty simple
I went all out on its Atk, because its just so important to pick up ko's on mawile
i went with 75 speed to work in both tailwind and trickroom
its already very bulky on the physical side and we do have intimidate in our team, so I decided to almost max out its spD, so it would survive tons of hits, for example weatherballs, earth powers, flash cannon, electro shot etc
Pelipper very simple
its not really bulky, except on its physical side, so I went with full SpA full speed and the focus sash to 100% a strong rockslide, solarbeam, electroshot, zap cannon, etc
Archaludon is very interesting
with 112 it also works in both trickroom aswell as tailwind
since when tailwind is active its speed turns to 224, making it 2 points faster than the fastest pokemon by nature, being mega aerodactyl (222 speed), now being able to ohko it with electro shot or flash cannon
with 176 its not very strong, but it becomes dangerously strong after just one electro shot
with its almost full SpD investment and the few hp points i invested its calculated to survive moves like focus blast, earth power, calm mind boosted moonblasts, light of ruins, etc
with leftovers, stamina, hospitality and life dew it is really hard to get rid of and can easily become a major threat
incineroar is not as optmized as archaludon, but with its 86 it also works great in both tailwind and trickroom
With 86 speed it outspeeds opposing incineroar
Since most incineroar run either 80 or 85 speed.
Why 85 speed? Because when tailwind is active it turns into 170 speed, and garchomps max speed is 169, with lots of garchomp counters as mega metagross having that 170 aswell
With my incin having 86 speed it wins the fakeout-speed check, outspeeds garchomp and mega metagross, as long as tailwind is active
with that spD and Hp it easily survives moonblast, earthpower etc, similiar to archaludon
sinistcha is purely here to keep everyone alive
with 176 and 143 def it survives moves such as flare blitz, kowtow cleave (especially thanks to its berry), ice punch from mega swampert, the rest is invested into its SpD, so when rain is active it easily survives 2 heatwaves from mega chari Y
I already mentioned why blastoise's speed is 127
but why isnt it full SpA?
I gave it as much SpA as it would need to ohko resisting Pokemon such as venusaur or basculegion, as long as shell smash has been used and rain is active with water spout
Otherwise it would be a overkill, and i instead used to remaining points into its defenses, since most priority moves are physical, and they can really lower my water spouts damage output, but we dont want water spout to be weak ofcourse, so most of the remaining points go straight into defense, not spd or hp
And how do you calculate such damage outputs?
I'll show you
32 SpA Charizard-Mega-Y Weather Ball (100 BP Fire) vs. 20 HP / 31 SpD Archaludon in Sun: 156-184 (84.3 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
